APP (Asia Pulp & Paper), a global leader in paper manufacturing with a history of over 50 years, has long relied on high-speed European converting machines for their thermal paper production. But as their China-based operations expanded, new challenges emerged—high maintenance costs, slow response times, and the inefficiencies of overseas service.

In 2021, APP made a strategic shift.

They decided to localize the production of 100,000 tons of thermal paper annually in China by investing in domestic downstream equipment. After a comprehensive evaluation of multiple suppliers, APP chose to partner with Jota Machinery.

The Core Problem: Waste, Precision, and Scale

APP’s thermal jumbo rolls, often 3200mm or even 4800mm wide, left them with high-volume edge waste—600mm, 700mm, or 800mm widths that were difficult to utilize efficiently. Instead of letting that potential go to waste, they envisioned using these offcuts to produce small thermal receipt rolls in-house.

This required a machine that could meet three critical demands:

• Ultra-high precision to ensure zero deviation from the first layer to the last
• Stable high-speed performance for mass production
• Tailored automation for easy operation and reduced labor costs

Jota Machinery stepped in with our fully automatic servo motor thermal paper slitting rewinder, capable of delivering exactly what APP needed—while going through a painful but rewarding process of mutual growth.

Phase One: Friction, Failure, and Feedback

At the beginning, it wasn’t easy.

APP’s engineering team set the bar incredibly high—requiring slit rolls with less than 2mm total deviation across the entire roll, from core to edge.

For many machine suppliers, this demand would be unreasonable.

For us? It was a challenge we had to accept.

We worked side-by-side with APP through real-time feedback loops, technical improvements, and three months of debugging and optimization. From tension stability to slitting accuracy, every element was put under the microscope.

The Breakthrough: From 60 Points to 85+

By the end of this joint project, three fully-motorized thermal paper slitting machines had been installed and were running nonstop every day, fulfilling APP’s expectations on all fronts.

In fact, APP engineers commented that our equipment had transformed from a “60-score machine” to a reliable “85+ score performer” in their internal evaluation system.

This wasn’t just a win for Jota Machinery. It was a mutual evolution.

APP gave us some of the toughest feedback we’ve ever received—and we’re grateful for it. Because of them, we upgraded our engineering designs, installed custom-built deviation control modules, and refined our tension systems.
