Predecessors
Dr. Horace Day invents an early pressure-sensitive adhesive medical tape (not water-activated, but sets the stage for adhesive tapes).
Water-activated tape (WAT), also known as gummed tape or paper tape, is a kraft paper-based packaging tape coated with a dry, starch-based adhesive that bonds instantly when moistened. Unlike plastic pressure-sensitive tape, WAT physically fuses with the carton surface by penetrating its fibers, creating a fiber-tearing seal that is stronger than the cardboard itself.
For heavy-duty applications, WAT is often reinforced with fiberglass threads arranged in a grid or linear pattern. This reinforcement boosts tensile strength, improves puncture resistance, and ensures the seal holds even under vibration, stacking pressure, or extreme handling conditions during transport.
As an eco-friendly alternative to plastic tape, WAT is fully recyclable and biodegradable, making it a preferred choice for brands aiming to reduce their environmental footprint. It’s widely used in e-commerce fulfillment centers, industrial shipping, and long-distance sea freight packaging, offering secure closure, tamper evidence, and professional presentation in one solution.
Strong and Tamper-Evident Seal
Water-activated tape bonds with the carton’s surface fibers to create a seal stronger than the box itself. This fiber-tearing bond resists peeling, vibration, and impact, making it ideal for heavy loads and long-distance shipping while clearly showing any tampering attempts.
Eco-Friendly and Sustainable
Made from recyclable kraft paper and biodegradable starch adhesive, WAT eliminates plastic waste and is repulpable with the carton. It supports sustainable packaging goals without compromising on performance, even in hot, cold, or humid conditions.

Water-activated tape is typically constructed in three layers.
The first layer is the outer kraft paper, the visible brown surface that comes into direct contact with the carton.
Made from natural kraft paper with a grammage of about 93–98 g/m² depending on whether the tape is reinforced or non-reinforced, this layer delivers high tear resistance, offers a printable surface for branding or handling instructions, and serves as the primary bonding interface with the box.
In reinforced WAT, the outer kraft layer may be slightly lighter to accommodate the embedded fiberglass mesh in the middle layer.

Fiberglass reinforcement in water-activated tape significantly enhances its performance for demanding shipping conditions.
Without reinforcement, kraft paper-based WAT can tear or stretch under heavy loads or prolonged vibration.
By embedding longitudinal or cross-directional fiberglass threads within the paper structure, the tape achieves up to 200% higher tensile strength (≥200 N/25 mm), improved puncture resistance, and better strain distribution across large cartons.
This added durability ensures compliance with heavy-duty packaging standards, making reinforced WAT the preferred choice for e-commerce fulfillment, industrial shipments, and long-distance sea freight.

The adhesive used on water-activated tape is a starch-based formula, typically made from natural corn or potato starch.
In its dry state, it remains non-tacky and stable for long-term storage. When moistened, the starch molecules swell and penetrate the carton’s surface fibers, creating a strong fiber-tearing bond that fuses the tape to the box.
This adhesive is non-toxic, biodegradable, and fully recyclable with the carton, making it both eco-friendly and tamper-evident—ideal for secure, sustainable packaging applications.

The line chart clearly demonstrates that the global water-activated tape market is on a strong upward trajectory, with all major research sources projecting growth through the next decade. While the starting market sizes differ — from USD 0.82 billion in Market Research Future’s conservative model to USD 2.1 billion in DataIntelo’s analysis — every forecast shows a consistent year-on-year increase. Higher CAGR estimates, such as DataIntelo’s 9.5% and Jota Machinery’s 8.5%, produce noticeably steeper curves, suggesting the market could more than double before 2033. In contrast, more modest growth rates like Verified Market Reports’ 7.5% and MRFR’s 5.5% still point to substantial expansion, albeit at a slower pace. Notably, the gap between the most optimistic and conservative forecasts widens over time, reflecting uncertainty in adoption speed driven by factors such as e-commerce growth, sustainability mandates, and industrial logistics demand. For reinforced water-activated tape — a critical heavy-duty segment of this market — these trends indicate robust demand ahead, with the potential for double-digit annual growth if its market share holds or increases.
