2026 Sustainable Packaging Awards

The 2026 Sustainable Packaging Design Awards have highlighted the growing diversity of sustainable packaging solutions, with gold awards presented across five separate sustainability principles rather than selecting a single overall approach.

This year’s awards recognized achievements in Resource Reduction, Reuse, Recycled Content, Design for Recovery, and Innovations in Resource Recovery, reflecting how companies are addressing packaging sustainability through different technical and commercial strategies.

According to the judging panel, separating the category acknowledged both the quality of submissions and the variety of approaches being developed to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining packaging performance and consumer functionality.

Resource Reduction: Laser Branding Eliminates Additional Packaging

The Resource Reduction gold award was presented to Ecomark Natural Branding, developed by Costa Group, Result Group, and The Packaging Hippie.

Instead of using labels, sleeves or promotional tags, the system applies food-safe laser branding directly onto avocado skins, with the technology also suitable for other fresh produce. By using the product itself as the branding surface, the solution reduces additional packaging materials while preserving product presentation at retail.

The judges recognized the project for demonstrating that packaging reduction and marketing objectives can be achieved simultaneously.

Reuse: Returnable Food Containers with Digital Tracking

Bonson Packaging received the gold award in the Reuse category for its RePlay Returnables system.

The solution combines reusable polypropylene food containers with digital tracking technology, allowing consumers to borrow, return and reuse containers through an account-based platform.

Designed for up to 50 reuse cycles, the system illustrates how reusable packaging can be supported by digital infrastructure to reduce dependence on single-use packaging.

Recycled Content: Post-Consumer Plastics for Industrial Stretch Film

The Recycled Content category was won by thinkpac for its ReCree8 PCR Pallet Wrap Range.

The pallet wrap is manufactured using a proprietary resin produced entirely from post-consumer soft plastics and contains 50% recycled content while maintaining the performance required for industrial pallet wrapping applications.

The mono-material polyethylene design enables businesses to reduce virgin plastic consumption without changing existing wrapping equipment.

Design for Recovery: Improving Recyclability Without Sacrificing Performance

The Design for Recovery gold award went to Caps & Closures for its Honey Squeeze Pack.

The package replaces conventional silicone dispensing valves with a recyclable alternative and is available with bottles, caps and valves containing up to 100% post-consumer recycled content.

In addition to improved recyclability, the package maintains features such as precise dispensing, one-handed operation and leak resistance.

Resource Recovery: Closed-Loop Postal Satchel

The Innovations in Resource Recovery award recognized the Smart Circular Satchel, developed by Australia Post, iQRenew, RollsPack, and Signet.

The postal satchel is manufactured entirely from Australian post-consumer recycled LDPE collected from household soft plastics.

Produced through a domestic supply chain, the mono-material design combines 100% recycled content with a controlled return pathway through Australia Post, helping improve material recovery while reducing contamination in recycling streams.

Additional Award Winners

Silver awards were presented to:

  • Woolworths – 600ml Spring Water (Resource Reduction)
  • Viscount – Nally Folding MegaBin (Reuse)
  • Impact International – Mono-material HDPE Tube and Cap Range (Design for Recovery)
  • Popit Recycling, Martogg and Procal Dairies – Milk Bottle Recycling System (Innovations in Resource Recovery)

A bronze award in the Resource Reduction category was presented to TrendPac and Coles for the Coles Antibacterial Handwash 250ml Bottle.

Sustainable Packaging Continues to Evolve

The 2026 awards demonstrate that sustainable packaging innovation is extending well beyond simply replacing one material with another.

Across the winning projects, companies focused on reducing material consumption, expanding reusable packaging systems, increasing recycled content, improving package recyclability, and strengthening material recovery infrastructure.

For the pulp, paper and packaging industries, the results reflect a broader shift toward designing packaging systems that balance environmental performance with functionality, supply chain efficiency and commercial viability, while recognizing that there is no single pathway to more sustainable packaging.
