Aluminum packaging is evolving from a traditional protective material into a platform for premium branding, digital traceability and circular packaging, according to Sonoco.
The packaging manufacturer says advances in printing technology, recyclability and connected packaging are creating new opportunities for food and consumer goods brands as sustainability regulations and consumer expectations continue to evolve.
Premium Packaging Supports Brand Differentiation
According to Francesco Giannolo, Vice President of Commercial for Sonoco Consumer Packaging EMEA and APAC, aluminum packaging is increasingly being used to enhance product presentation while maintaining the functional benefits of metal packaging.
One recent example is Sonoco’s collaboration with Fábrica de Conservas da Murtosa, where advanced lithographic printing combined with embossing and debossing transformed a traditional Portuguese sardine tin into a premium retail package designed to emphasize heritage and gift appeal.
The company said similar approaches are being adopted across food categories as brands seek stronger shelf differentiation through packaging design.
PPWR Drives Interest in Aluminum Packaging
Sonoco also expects the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) to encourage greater adoption of recyclable packaging materials.
The company said more brands are evaluating alternatives to multi-material flexible pouches, particularly in the growing wet pet food market.
According to Sonoco, aluminum offers several characteristics supporting circular packaging objectives, including:
- High barrier performance
- Established recycling infrastructure
- Permanent recyclability
- Protection against light, oxygen and moisture
The company has recently expanded its metal packaging capacity by opening a new wet pet food production line in Outreau, France, complementing its paper packaging capabilities for dry pet food.
Material Selection Depends on Product Requirements
Despite growing interest in aluminum, Sonoco emphasized that no single packaging material is suitable for every application.
The company said packaging decisions should consider factors such as:
- Shelf-life requirements
- Product formulation
- Filling technology
- Distribution conditions
- Circular economy objectives
- Carbon reduction targets
- Consumer expectations
Alongside aluminum, Sonoco continues to supply steel and paper-based packaging, allowing customers to select materials based on individual technical and commercial requirements.
Digital Packaging Adds Consumer Engagement
Beyond product protection, digital technologies are becoming increasingly integrated into aluminum packaging.
Sonoco said advanced printing systems now allow unique QR codes to be incorporated directly onto aluminum containers.
These digital features can provide consumers with access to:
- Product information
- Origin and traceability data
- Recycling instructions
- Sustainability information
The company also believes serialized packaging codes could support future Digital Product Passport initiatives by improving traceability throughout packaging supply chains.
Aluminum Positioned for Circular Packaging Growth
Looking ahead, Sonoco expects aluminum to remain an important packaging material as sustainability requirements continue to tighten.
The company pointed to aluminum’s permanent recyclability and established recycling infrastructure as advantages under evolving regulatory frameworks, including PPWR.
For the packaging industry, aluminum is increasingly being viewed as more than a protective material. Advances in premium decoration, digital connectivity and traceability are expanding its role in helping brands combine product protection, consumer engagement and circular economy objectives within a single packaging format.
