Lucid Imaging has expanded into the US label converting market with the installation of its OptiCheck Label automated inspection system at Imageworx in Levittown, Pennsylvania.
The India-based inspection technology manufacturer is introducing the system in the US under the SureMax brand. At Imageworx, the technology has been integrated directly with a Berkeley Machinery slitter rewinder, providing continuous inspection during the converting process.
The installation gives Lucid Imaging a commercial reference in North America as the company seeks to expand its international installed base.
Line-Scan Imaging Checks the Complete Web Width
OptiCheck Label uses high-resolution line-scan imaging to continuously inspect the complete web width and identify print defects while material is running through production.
For label converters, this moves inspection away from relying solely on intermittent operator checks.
According to Lucid Imaging, the platform can provide continuous defect inspection alongside production traceability. Depending on the application, additional inspection functions can also be incorporated, including:
- Variable-data verification
- Barcode and 2D-code inspection
- Code grading
- PDF and artwork verification
- Production history and traceability
Dheeraj Kumar, product manager at Lucid Imaging, said the system was developed to combine inspection performance with practical day-to-day operation.
The company is particularly focused on making inspection data accessible to operators rather than simply identifying defects.
Features including job recall, inspection history and defect review allow production teams to return to previous jobs and investigate what happened during a production run.
Perry Strauss, chief operator at the Imageworx Innovation Center, described the system as highly user-friendly and highlighted its ability to retrieve previous jobs and review recorded production errors.
Inspection Moves Onto the Slitter Rewinder
One notable aspect of the Imageworx installation is where the inspection technology has been deployed.
Rather than operating as an isolated inspection station, OptiCheck Label has been integrated with a slitter rewinder.
This allows inspection to become part of the converting workflow as the printed web is processed into finished rolls.
For label production, this can be particularly relevant because a defect identified during inspection must ultimately be located and managed before the affected material reaches the customer.
Lucid Imaging says its system can be adapted to different presses, rewinders and converting environments according to individual production requirements.
The company is continuing development around inspection speed, defect detection, variable-data verification, automation and traceability.
Why Automated Inspection Is Becoming More Important
Label production is becoming increasingly data-intensive.
A label may need to carry much more than graphics and product information. Depending on the application, converters may also be handling barcodes, QR or other 2D codes, serialized information and variable data.
That creates two separate inspection requirements.
The converter needs to determine whether the printed image is correct, while also verifying whether variable or machine-readable information meets the required specification.
At the same time, production speeds make continuous manual inspection increasingly difficult.
Automated web inspection systems can therefore serve as another layer of quality control, continuously monitoring the moving web and recording information that operators can review when a defect is detected.
For applications involving variable information, the inspection challenge becomes more complex because the system may need to determine not simply whether something has been printed clearly, but whether the correct information has been printed.
Lucid Imaging Targets Wider North American Expansion
Following the Pennsylvania installation, Lucid Imaging plans to develop a larger installed base in North America and establish local partnerships for application support and after-sales service.
The company sees growing demand from converters for higher levels of automation, complete web inspection, improved production traceability and reduced dependence on manual inspection.
Rather than offering a fixed inspection configuration, Lucid Imaging says it intends to develop OptiCheck Label as a modular platform that can be adapted to different converting environments.
Beyond North America, the company has also identified Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia as potential growth markets.
Its expansion strategy will focus on building local partnerships and technical support alongside equipment installations.
The first US deployment is therefore more than an individual equipment installation. It gives Lucid Imaging an opportunity to demonstrate how its inspection technology performs when integrated into an operating North American label converting line.
As label converters pursue greater automation and traceability, the connection between printing, inspection and downstream slitting and rewinding is likely to become an increasingly important part of the production workflow.
