Ecostrat Inc. and BMI Group have announced a collaboration to use BDO Zone Ratings to prepare legacy pulp and paper mill assets across Canada for new bioeconomy investment.
The partnership aims to help transform former forest-industry sites into next-generation industrial platforms for renewable materials, fuels and advanced manufacturing.
Turning Former Mill Sites into Bioeconomy Hubs
The collaboration will evaluate selected BMI properties for future projects including:
- biofuels
- renewable chemicals
- biogas
- engineered wood products
- mass timber
- advanced fibre manufacturing
- biorefinery platforms
BMI Group has acquired nine former pulp and paper mill sites across Canada with the goal of repurposing them for new industrial uses.
Why BDO Zone Ratings Matter
BDO Zone Ratings provide investment-grade regional analysis to help developers and investors understand site readiness.
The assessments examine factors such as:
- fibre supply
- infrastructure
- logistics
- feedstock availability
- industrial readiness
- regional competitiveness
Ecostrat said more than $10 billion in plant announcements have already been linked to BDO Zones.
Bioveld North as a Model
BMI’s Bioveld North project in Espanola, Ontario, is an example of the redevelopment model.
The site is being positioned as a full-fibre bioproduct hub focused on:
- advanced materials
- renewable energy
- new fibre-based manufacturing
- industrial diversification
Industry Insight
Canada has many legacy pulp and paper assets with existing infrastructure, fibre access and skilled communities. Repurposing these sites can reduce development risk and support new investment in forest regions.
The Ecostrat-BMI collaboration highlights how former mills can become platforms for Canada’s next generation of bioeconomy growth.
Final Thought
The partnership shows a practical path for converting idle forest-industry assets into modern biorefineries and advanced manufacturing hubs. For Canada’s forestry communities, this could create new opportunities from existing infrastructure and fibre resources.
