CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland and Labrador — Kruger Inc. is expected to reveal new details of its proposed CAD 700 million revitalization project for Corner Brook Pulp and Paper during a news conference scheduled for tomorrow, marking a significant step in the future of one of Atlantic Canada’s largest forest products operations.
The announcement follows the recent extension of the mill’s power purchase agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, giving the provincial government additional time to evaluate Kruger’s long-term investment strategy.
Modernization Plan Targets Long-Term Competitiveness
The proposed revitalization project includes several major upgrades designed to modernize the Corner Brook mill, including:
- Construction of a new pulp storage facility
- Upgrades to site infrastructure
- Installation of new chip handling and receiving equipment
- Modernization of existing paper production operations
The investment aims to improve operational efficiency while supporting the mill’s long-term competitiveness within Canada’s forest products sector.
Power Agreement Supports Project Review
Earlier this month, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro extended its interim power purchase agreement with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper until June 2027.
The agreement allows the provincial government to continue reviewing Kruger’s diversification and modernization plans while maintaining access to the mill’s electricity generation capacity.
Under the arrangement, NL Hydro can purchase electricity from the mill when required without increasing electricity rates for customers.
Key Employer in Newfoundland’s Forestry Sector
Corner Brook Pulp and Paper remains one of western Newfoundland’s largest industrial employers, with approximately 300 employees.
Beyond direct employment, the mill also supports regional forestry operations by purchasing wood fibre from numerous commercial suppliers, making it an important economic driver for surrounding communities.
The proposed investment is expected to strengthen the long-term outlook for both the mill and Newfoundland and Labrador’s forest sector as demand grows for efficient, sustainable pulp and paper production.
Further details on the project, including investment timelines and implementation plans, are expected during Kruger’s announcement.
