Cullen Sustainable Packaging is investing £5 million in its Glasgow manufacturing base as demand for fibre-based packaging continues to rise.
The privately owned company now produces around 500 million items per year and aims to roughly double that output through further investment in equipment, facilities and new markets.
Machine 8000 Drives Capacity Expansion
A central part of the upgrade is Cullen’s new Moulded Fibre Machine 8000, developed and built by the company’s own engineering team.
The line uses Cullen’s latest belt technology, designed to improve:
- production efficiency
- product quality
- output consistency
- operational control
By building much of its machinery internally, Cullen says it can better manage production speed, volumes and product requirements.
Closed-Loop Recycling Strengthens Sustainability Model
Cullen also operates a closed-loop recycling process, reusing more than 8,000 tonnes of corrugate waste from its own operations each year and returning it into moulded fibre production.
This supports the company’s positioning in sustainable packaging, especially as more brands seek alternatives to plastic and conventional packaging formats.
Wider Site Upgrade
The Glasgow investment also includes:
- improvements to existing production lines
- expanded site infrastructure
- a new Kasemake X5 corrugate sample table to speed up customer sampling
Final Thought
Cullen’s £5m investment reflects a wider packaging trend: demand for moulded fibre is moving from niche sustainability projects into larger-scale industrial production.
For packaging suppliers, the next competitive advantage may come from capacity, speed, internal engineering control and closed-loop material use.
