NICOSIA, Cyprus — CYPET Technologies has introduced what it says is the world’s first 1,000-litre PET water tank, combining lightweight design with a new manufacturing process that reduces both plastic consumption and energy use.
The innovation has been shortlisted in the Circular Plastics category of the Sustainability Awards 2026 and is designed to expand the use of PET beyond traditional beverage bottles into large-capacity industrial packaging.
Large PET Tank Uses 40% Less Plastic
According to CYPET, the new 1,000-litre PET water tank weighs approximately 10 kilograms, making it around 40% lighter than conventional high-density polyethylene (HDPE) water tanks of the same capacity.
The weight reduction translates into material savings of approximately 6 to 8 kilograms of plastic per tank, reducing raw material consumption and lowering transportation-related carbon emissions.
The company also noted that PET is fully recyclable, supporting circular economy objectives and material recovery.
Single-Stage Process Improves Manufacturing Efficiency
Beyond the product itself, CYPET says the innovation lies in its proprietary single-stage injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) technology.
Conventional PET container production typically involves manufacturing a preform, cooling it to room temperature, reheating it and then blow moulding the final container.
CYPET’s process integrates these stages into a single machine, allowing the preform to move directly into blow moulding without complete cooling and reheating.
According to the company, this approach reduces processing energy consumption by approximately 25% while also simplifying production.
Commercial Validation Underway
The first commercial application is being produced by one of CYPET’s customers for the Indian market, where the tanks are undergoing real-world validation.
The company said customers from other regions have also requested samples as they evaluate the technology for their own markets.
If adopted commercially, the technology could open new opportunities for PET in large-format packaging and storage applications beyond its traditional use in beverage containers.
The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2026 will be announced on 11 November during the Sustainable Packaging Summit in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
