Domtar’s Clarion™ POS 48S phenol-free thermal paper has been qualified for use with Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions’ TCx® Print S10 point-of-sale printer, expanding the range of OEM-validated receipt media available to retailers.
The qualification confirms that the thermal paper meets Toshiba’s requirements for use with the TCx Print S10 while addressing growing interest in BPA-free, BPS-free and phenol-free receipt paper.
For retailers, converters and distributors, the approval provides additional assurance around compatibility between the receipt media and the POS printing hardware.
Toshiba Qualification Confirms Printer Compatibility
Receipt paper may appear to be a relatively simple consumable, but its interaction with a thermal printer can affect print quality, feeding reliability and everyday checkout operations.
Toshiba’s qualification process provides technical validation that Domtar’s Clarion POS 48S can operate with its TCx Print S10 printer.
Hillary Crawford, Product Manager, Thermal and Technical Paper at Domtar, said completing the qualification confirms the paper can provide the performance required for daily POS applications.
“Successfully completing Toshiba’s qualification process confirms that Clarion POS delivers the dependable performance retailers rely on in daily POS operations,” Crawford said.
According to Domtar, the paper maintains the print quality, durability and operating reliability expected from thermal receipt media while meeting relevant regulatory requirements.
Clarion POS Uses Phenol-Free Thermal Chemistry
The environmental and regulatory aspect of the development centers on the thermal coating.
Clarion POS is positioned as a phenol-free thermal receipt paper, meaning it is manufactured without BPA and BPS developers.
Bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) have faced increasing scrutiny in thermal paper applications, contributing to demand for alternative thermal chemistries in retail receipt markets.
For retailers evaluating receipt media, however, changing paper chemistry must also be considered alongside printer compatibility and operational performance.
The Toshiba qualification addresses that practical requirement by validating Clarion POS 48S for a specific POS printer platform.
WMU Testing Provides Recyclability Verification
Clarion POS has also undergone recyclability testing at Western Michigan University.
According to Domtar, it is the first thermal receipt paper certified recyclable by Western Michigan University after completing the university’s SBS-E testing protocol.
The result provides third-party verification of recyclability under the conditions of that testing protocol.
This is relevant because thermal receipts combine a paper substrate with functional coatings required to produce an image when exposed to heat. Establishing how these materials perform in recycling processes is therefore an important consideration when assessing their end-of-life characteristics.
Retailers Gain Another Validated Receipt Paper Option
With qualification complete, converters, paper distributors and retailers can deploy Clarion POS 48S with Toshiba’s TCx Print S10 using an OEM-validated paper and printer combination.
The development brings together several considerations increasingly influencing POS receipt procurement: thermal print performance, equipment compatibility, chemical composition, regulatory requirements and recyclability.
Domtar and Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions said they plan to continue exploring technical collaboration and other initiatives related to innovation and sustainability in the retail sector.
