KINGSPORT, Tennessee — Domtar’s Kingsport packaging mill has improved containerboard production efficiency after implementing Maintech’s Dryer Section Passivation (DSP) technology, reducing sheet breaks and eliminating manual cleaning in critical areas of the paper machine.
The mill partnered with Maintech to address sticky deposits in the dryer section that were affecting machine uptime, production efficiency and winder performance.
DSP Technology Targets Sticky Deposits
Dryer Section Passivation (DSP) combines specialized chemical formulations, spray equipment and application methods designed to prevent deposits from accumulating on:
- Dryer cans
- Dryer fabrics
- Fabric rolls
- Calender rolls
The technology minimizes the buildup of “stickies” that can cause paper breaks, increase maintenance requirements and reduce overall machine performance.
Containerboard Machine Records Operational Improvements
The DSP evaluation was carried out on a paper machine producing approximately 600,000 tonnes per year of recycled linerboard and corrugated medium.
Operating at speeds between 1,900 and 4,500 feet per minute, the machine achieved several measurable improvements following installation of two DSP application systems.
According to Maintech, the project delivered:
- Elimination of manual cleaning on the first dryer doctor blade
- 40% reduction in dryer can- and felt-related sheet breaks
- Reduced sticky deposit accumulation
- Improved machine reliability and uptime
- Higher winder productivity
- Increased production efficiency
The reduction in deposits also minimized routine cleaning of dryer doctor blades and felts, allowing operators to spend more time on production activities.
Higher Production With Lower Energy Use
Following implementation, the mill was able to operate at higher production speeds while reducing steam consumption in the drying process.
According to Maintech, the improvements contributed to lower energy costs, enhanced operational safety and more stable machine performance.
Supporting Reliable Containerboard Production
Domtar said the project supports its efforts to further optimize an already high-performing containerboard operation.
“Maintech has played a pivotal role in enhancing our operational efficiency,” said Shivamurthy Modgi, Operations Manager at Domtar Kingsport.
“Their solutions have enabled us to streamline processes, reduce downtime and achieve more consistent output, ultimately contributing to increased productivity and customer satisfaction.”
As paper manufacturers continue seeking greater efficiency, technologies that reduce unplanned downtime and improve machine reliability are becoming increasingly important for maintaining productivity and lowering operating costs.
