EcoCurve pizza box

UK-developed EcoCurve design helps lower packaging material consumption, transport emissions and EPR costs without changing existing production lines

A redesigned corrugated pizza box is demonstrating how structural engineering can improve packaging sustainability without introducing new materials or disrupting manufacturing operations.

Known as EcoCurve, the patented design reduces corrugated board usage by approximately 10% compared with conventional pizza boxes while maintaining the strength, functionality and handling performance required by manufacturers, foodservice operators and consumers.

The innovation reflects a growing industry trend toward lightweight packaging as companies seek practical ways to reduce carbon emissions, conserve raw materials and prepare for increasingly stringent packaging regulations.

Material Reduction Delivers Supply Chain Benefits

Although the board reduction is relatively small for each individual box, the environmental impact becomes significant when applied across the billions of pizza boxes produced annually.

Using less corrugated board helps reduce:

  • Paper fibre consumption
  • Energy use during paper production
  • Water consumption
  • Manufacturing-related carbon emissions

The lighter box blanks also improve transportation efficiency by reducing shipment weight and allowing better vehicle utilization throughout the packaging supply chain.

Lower material volumes can also decrease warehouse space requirements for converters, distributors and foodservice operators.

Compatible With Existing Manufacturing Equipment

Unlike many packaging innovations that require new converting equipment or production changes, EcoCurve has been designed to integrate into existing manufacturing and foodservice operations.

Manufacturers can produce the redesigned boxes without major equipment modifications, while restaurants continue using the packaging in the same way as conventional pizza boxes.

This compatibility reduces implementation costs and lowers barriers to adoption.

Packaging Regulations Increase Value of Lightweight Designs

The development comes as packaging producers face growing regulatory pressure under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs and other packaging legislation introduced across multiple markets.

Reducing packaging weight can help companies:

  • Lower material consumption
  • Reduce packaging-related emissions
  • Improve resource efficiency
  • Potentially decrease EPR compliance costs

As producers become increasingly responsible for the environmental impact of packaging, lightweight structural design is becoming an important sustainability strategy.

International Interest Continues to Grow

EcoCurve has secured international protection through Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) filings, supporting commercialization in overseas markets.

The design is manufactured under licence by Ankutsan Packaging and has already been adopted by two UK pizza chains.

Several international pizza businesses have also signed option agreements to evaluate the technology for their own operations.

Industry Recognition

The innovation has been shortlisted in two categories at the upcoming London Packaging Week Awards, recognizing both its structural design and contribution to sustainable packaging.

Engineering Rather Than New Materials

Rather than replacing corrugated board with alternative materials, EcoCurve demonstrates how redesigning existing packaging can deliver measurable environmental improvements.

As packaging manufacturers continue balancing sustainability, cost and operational efficiency, innovations that achieve equivalent performance using fewer raw materials are expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing the environmental footprint of foodservice packaging.
