fibre packaging innovation

MELBOURNE, Australia — Fibre packaging innovation is entering a new phase as manufacturers shift their focus from simply replacing plastic to designing packaging systems that balance automation, product protection, recyclability and commercial performance.

That was the key message from an Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) panel discussion held during foodpro 2026, where packaging experts agreed that future fibre packaging success will depend on systems thinking rather than material substitution alone.

Industry Calls for End-to-End Packaging Design

Moderated by Keith Chessell, the discussion featured representatives from Detpak, Opal and Zipform Packaging, who emphasized that packaging should be developed as part of an integrated production system.

Instead of evaluating packaging only by its material, manufacturers are increasingly considering how new fibre solutions perform across:

  • Automated filling lines
  • Food protection
  • Logistics and transport
  • Retail handling
  • Consumer experience
  • Recycling infrastructure

The panel argued that involving packaging suppliers earlier in product development can reduce implementation challenges while improving commercial outcomes.

Fibre Packaging Must Work With Existing Production Lines

According to Detpak, replacing plastic requires more than introducing a new material.

Its fibre tomato punnet, developed with fresh produce supplier Perfection Fresh, required multiple engineering trials and equipment modifications before commercial rollout.

The experience highlighted that successful fibre packaging must integrate with existing manufacturing operations while maintaining productivity and protecting fresh produce throughout the supply chain.

Smarter Engineering Replaces Simple Material Substitution

Opal showcased how customer expectations are changing for fibre packaging used in cold-chain applications.

Its latest Arctic Shield insulated fibre carton has been redesigned to deliver longer cooling performance and improved leak resistance, reflecting increasing demand for packaging that combines sustainability with operational performance.

Rather than relying solely on new materials, the company said future innovation will focus on lightweight designs and optimizing packaging across the entire supply chain.

Dry-Moulded Fibre Gains Momentum

Zipform Packaging highlighted growing interest in dry-moulded fibre technology, developed through its partnership with PulPac.

Compared with conventional wet moulding, dry-moulded fibre offers several manufacturing advantages, including:

The technology is also being developed for high-barrier food packaging applications, including meat trays designed without separate plastic liners.

Regulations Continue to Shape Material Development

The discussion also addressed the growing influence of sustainability regulations on packaging development.

Topics including recyclability, recycled fibre content and evolving PFAS requirements are encouraging manufacturers to balance:

  • Food safety
  • Barrier performance
  • Fibre recovery
  • Manufacturing efficiency
  • Regulatory compliance

Panelists noted that achieving sustainable outcomes increasingly depends on optimizing the entire packaging system rather than replacing one material with another.

Industry Focus Shifts to Systems Thinking

While the packaging examples ranged from fresh produce and seafood to meat packaging and paper bottles, they shared a common direction.

Industry experts concluded that the next generation of fibre packaging will be defined by collaboration across the value chain, where packaging designers, machinery suppliers, brand owners and manufacturers work together to develop solutions that meet both environmental and commercial objectives.

As sustainability expectations continue to rise, fibre packaging innovation is increasingly being measured by how effectively it integrates product protection, production efficiency, recyclability and supply chain performance into a single packaging system.
