LONDON — The Flexible Plastic Fund (FPF) has launched FlexCircular, a new initiative designed to accelerate the United Kingdom’s transition toward a circular economy for flexible plastic packaging by expanding efforts beyond collection and into recycling infrastructure and system-wide circularity.
The initiative builds on the success of the FPF FlexCollect project, which demonstrated that large-scale household collection of flexible plastic packaging can be implemented across the UK.
Building on FlexCollect Success
FlexCircular represents the next phase of the Flexible Plastic Fund’s strategy to improve the management of flexible plastic packaging after consumer use.
While FlexCollect focused on proving that household collection systems could operate effectively at scale, the new program aims to address the next challenge: ensuring collected materials are successfully recycled and returned to the economy.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the connection between collection, sorting, recycling and end-market demand, supporting a more complete circular system for flexible plastics.
Supporting a Circular Packaging Economy
Flexible plastic packaging remains one of the most challenging packaging formats to recycle due to material complexity and limited recycling infrastructure.
By focusing on system-wide collaboration, FlexCircular aims to help improve recycling outcomes while supporting the UK’s broader circular economy objectives.
The initiative is expected to encourage cooperation across the packaging value chain, including producers, recyclers, retailers and waste management organizations.
Focus Shifts From Collection to Recycling
The launch reflects a growing industry recognition that collection alone is not enough to achieve circularity.
For flexible plastic packaging to remain in use, effective recycling infrastructure and stable markets for recycled materials are equally important.
FlexCircular is intended to help bridge this gap by supporting the development of a more integrated recycling system capable of keeping flexible plastics in circulation for longer.
As governments and businesses continue investing in circular packaging solutions, initiatives such as FlexCircular are expected to play an increasingly important role in improving resource efficiency and reducing plastic waste across the UK.
