A new Packaging Digest survey shows that Gen Z sustainable packaging expectations are reshaping how brands communicate environmental responsibility.
More than 90% of Gen Z respondents said sustainable packaging is an important purchase consideration, making packaging one of the most visible signals of a brand’s environmental values.
Key Findings
Gen Z consumers prioritize:
- recyclable packaging
- minimal packaging and less waste
- recycled content
- clear label claims
- transparent sustainability information
- responsible disposal, recycling and reuse
However, cost still matters. Around 49% said a better price would make them switch brands, showing that sustainability must remain affordable.
Packaging Is the Sustainability Signal
For many Gen Z consumers, packaging is the first and most direct proof of a brand’s sustainability commitment.
This creates both an opportunity and a risk.
Brands can use packaging to communicate:
- recycled content
- recyclability
- supply chain transparency
- lower-waste design
- responsible material sourcing
But vague claims may backfire. About half of Gen Z respondents remain skeptical of sustainability claims and often verify information themselves.
Plastic-Free Is Not the Only Priority
Only 20% selected plastic-free packaging as an important feature.
This suggests Gen Z is looking beyond simple anti-plastic messaging. Recyclability, reduced waste and recycled content may matter more than whether packaging is completely plastic-free.
Industry Insight
The survey shows that Gen Z expects companies to take responsibility for packaging end-of-life.
For brands, the best strategy is not only to use sustainable materials, but to make sustainability easy to understand through clear labels, honest claims and practical disposal guidance.
Final Thought
Gen Z wants packaging that is sustainable, affordable and transparent. Brands that combine recyclable design with credible communication will be better positioned to earn trust from the next generation of consumers.
