J.D. Irving engineering talent

As pulp and paper manufacturers continue to address workforce renewal and technical talent development, knowledge transfer between experienced professionals and the next generation is becoming increasingly important across the industry.

A recent example comes from J.D. Irving’s pulp and paper division, where a father and his two sons are building engineering careers within the company’s forest products operations, illustrating how mentorship, practical experience and continuous learning contribute to long-term workforce development.

Engineering Careers Built on Practical Experience

Tim Valentine serves as Manager of Project Engineering with Irving Forest Services, supporting the company’s pulp and paper operations.

His two sons have also chosen engineering pathways within the organization. Ken Valentine recently joined Irving Pulp & Paper as an Associate Mechanical Engineer, while Josiah Valentine is completing a summer work placement as part of his mechanical engineering studies at the University of New Brunswick.

According to the family, early exposure to practical engineering projects—including equipment repairs, construction work and mechanical rebuilding—helped develop problem-solving skills and an interest in understanding industrial systems.

Ken Valentine said those experiences encouraged him to approach technical challenges with curiosity while building confidence in solving engineering problems.

Mentorship Supports the Next Generation

Beyond technical knowledge, the family highlights the importance of encouragement, perseverance and continuous learning as key principles supporting career development.

Josiah Valentine said his father’s willingness to encourage questions and support new challenges helped shape his approach to learning engineering concepts and developing practical skills.

For manufacturers operating complex industrial facilities, mentorship remains an important element of workforce development as experienced engineers prepare younger professionals to manage increasingly automated production environments.

Knowledge Transfer Benefits Industrial Operations

Tim Valentine said working within the same business area provides opportunities to observe his sons’ professional development while sharing experiences gained throughout his engineering career.

He noted that conversations with colleagues about their progress have created meaningful opportunities to exchange ideas and discuss technical challenges from different career perspectives.

Across the pulp and paper industry, companies are placing greater emphasis on structured knowledge transfer as experienced employees retire and demand for engineering talent continues to grow.

Engineering mentorship programs, internships and university partnerships are becoming increasingly common strategies for attracting and developing skilled professionals capable of supporting future mill modernization and operational reliability.

Workforce Development Remains an Industry Priority

The pulp and paper sector continues to invest in automation, digital technologies and equipment modernization, increasing demand for mechanical, electrical and process engineering expertise.

As a result, attracting younger professionals while preserving institutional knowledge has become a strategic priority for many manufacturers.

Industry observers note that successful workforce development extends beyond technical training to include leadership development, problem-solving capabilities and continuous learning—qualities that help prepare future engineers for increasingly complex manufacturing environments.

For companies investing in long-term operational resilience, building strong connections between experienced professionals and emerging talent remains an important part of sustaining engineering capability across the forest products industry.
