Jeonju Paper Corporation has selected Valmet to rebuild the press and predryer sections of its PM5 paper machine in South Korea, targeting lower energy consumption, improved runnability and greater operating reliability.
The rebuilt machine is scheduled to start up in fall 2027.
The project represents the latest stage in the companies’ long-term cooperation and is intended to extend the operating life of PM5 while improving its overall production efficiency.
Press Section Rebuild Targets Lower Steam Consumption
A central objective of the modernization is to improve water removal in the press section before the paper web enters the dryer section.
Effective mechanical dewatering is important to paper machine energy efficiency because water removed through pressing does not subsequently need to be evaporated using steam in the dryer section.
Valmet said the PM5 press section rebuild will reduce steam consumption, resulting in energy savings during production.
Jeonju Paper expects the modernization to improve energy efficiency without compromising production performance or paper quality.
“This rebuild is an important step in our continuous efforts to improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of our production,” said Yong-Sung Lee, mill manager of Jeonju Paper Corporation.
According to Lee, the company expects the upgraded press section to improve machine runnability, operational reliability and overall process efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of production.
Predryer Runnability System Also Upgraded
The investment extends beyond the press section.
Valmet will also rebuild part of the predryer section, including an upgrade to its runnability system.
Paper web stability becomes particularly important through the dryer section, where disturbances can contribute to web breaks and production interruptions.
Valmet said the runnability upgrade is intended to improve overall machine efficiency while contributing additional energy savings.
The delivery also includes a spare-parts package.
Valmet did not disclose detailed performance guarantees, the expected reduction in steam consumption or the resulting energy savings.
Project Extends PM5’s Operating Life
Rather than replacing the complete production line, Jeonju Paper is modernizing key sections of the existing machine.
Valmet said the project will help extend PM5’s lifecycle, while improving the machine’s performance and energy efficiency.
Kari Lamminmäki, product sales manager, headbox, press and former at Valmet’s Packaging and Paper business area, said the project combines established technology with solutions adapted to the mill’s specific requirements.
“The project combines proven technology with solutions tailored to the mill’s specific needs, helping to optimize machine performance and reduce energy use,” Lamminmäki said.
For Jeonju Paper, the investment forms part of a longer-term effort to strengthen PM5’s competitiveness while responding to changing customer and sustainability requirements.
Start-Up Planned for Fall 2027
The PM5 modernization order was included in Valmet’s orders received for the second quarter of 2026.
The companies have not disclosed the value of the contract.
Installation and commissioning will lead to a planned start-up in fall 2027.
The project adds to continuing investment across the paper industry in rebuilding existing machines, where improvements to pressing, drying and runnability can provide a route to reducing energy consumption while retaining major existing production assets.
Jeonju Paper Corporation is a South Korean paper producer serving domestic and export markets, with products including newsprint and corrugated board.
