Koehler Group sustainability report 2025

OBERKIRCH, Germany — Koehler Group says it continued advancing its long-term sustainability strategy in 2025, highlighting progress in renewable energy generation, recyclable packaging paper, climate action and workforce development despite a challenging economic environment.

The company’s latest Sustainability Report outlines progress toward its 2030 sustainability goals, with measurable developments across six strategic action areas.

“Our sustainability strategy is built on clearly defined objectives, measurable KPIs and concrete projects,” said Kai Furler, CEO of Koehler Group.

Flexible Packaging Paper Supports Plastic Replacement

One of the company’s key priorities during 2025 was expanding its portfolio of flexible packaging paper designed as an alternative to conventional plastic packaging.

According to Koehler Paper, the recyclable paper-based packaging solutions can help customers reduce carbon emissions while improving the environmental performance of their packaging portfolios.

The company also expanded environmental transparency by preparing Product Environmental Footprints (PEFs) for products manufactured at its Oberkirch paper mill, allowing lifecycle environmental impacts to be measured more comprehensively.

Renewable Energy Expansion Nears 2030 Target

Koehler reported significant progress in renewable energy following the commissioning of its Langer Wald wind farm.

The company said it has already achieved more than 98% of its goal of generating, on an annual basis, more renewable energy than is required to operate its paper production facilities by 2030.

During the reporting year, the company’s greenhouse gas reduction targets were also validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming they are aligned with internationally recognized climate science.

Efficiency Projects and Sustainable Fibre Supply

Beyond renewable energy, Koehler invested in energy-efficiency improvements across its manufacturing operations.

Among the completed projects was the installation of a heat recovery system on a coating machine at the company’s Kehl paper mill, helping reduce energy consumption and emissions.

The company also reported that 100% of its virgin fibre now comes from sustainably managed forests and controlled sources, supporting responsible raw material sourcing across its paper business.

Investment Continues Despite Economic Challenges

Koehler acknowledged that high industrial electricity prices and broader economic pressures remain significant challenges for energy-intensive manufacturers.

The company said it plans to continue expanding renewable energy generation while advocating for stable industrial policies that support Germany’s manufacturing competitiveness.

The report also highlighted continued investment in employee development, with the company exceeding its targets for apprenticeship participation and annual training hours per employee during 2025.

Koehler Group also retained its EcoVadis Platinum sustainability rating, placing the company among the top 1% of assessed businesses worldwide for sustainability performance.
