Kruger Project Tuckamore

CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland and Labrador — Kruger Inc. has launched Project Tuckamore, a major modernization initiative that will revitalize its Corner Brook Pulp and Paper mill while transforming the site into an integrated renewable energy and industrial hub.

The project combines paper mill modernization, sustainable forestry and renewable energy investments to improve the mill’s long-term competitiveness while supporting Newfoundland and Labrador’s evolving energy infrastructure.

Integrated Modernization and Renewable Energy

The Corner Brook mill produces newsprint from thermomechanical pulp and currently operates two hydroelectric generating stations, a biomass cogeneration plant and a dedicated woodlands operation.

Under Project Tuckamore, Kruger plans to modernize forestry operations by transitioning from 8-foot cut-to-length pulpwood harvesting to full-tree-length harvesting, allowing sawlogs to be delivered directly to sawmills while paper production increasingly relies on sawmill chips and biomass residuals.

The project also includes improvements to chip receiving systems and the construction of a biomass drying facility to enhance raw material utilization and support regional sawmill partners.

Renewable Power Supports Paper Production

Paper production will be supported by a combination of wind power, biomass cogeneration and refurbished hydroelectric facilities.

Key energy investments include:

  • Construction of a new wind farm within existing harvest areas.
  • Refurbishment of the Deer Lake Power and Watson’s Brook hydroelectric stations.
  • Penstock replacement and conversion of hydro facilities to 60-cycle power.
  • Upgrades to plant control systems.

Kruger also plans to remove the Mount Bernard Avenue tank farm, a move expected to contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Forestry and Circular Resource Utilization

The project places greater emphasis on maximizing the use of harvested timber by directing higher-value sawlogs to lumber production while utilizing wood chips and biomass by-products for paper manufacturing.

This integrated resource strategy is intended to improve fiber utilization, strengthen cooperation with regional sawmills and support more efficient use of forest resources.

Community Engagement Begins

To support public consultation, Kruger has opened a Community Engagement Office in Corner Brook dedicated to Project Tuckamore.

The office officially opened on July 15 and will provide local residents with information about the project while offering opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback throughout the development process.

Founded in 1904, Kruger is one of North America’s major producers of tissue products, recycled containerboard, corrugated packaging, publication papers, specialty papers, pulp and renewable energy. The company said Project Tuckamore represents a long-term investment designed to strengthen both the Corner Brook mill and the regional forest products industry.
