TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Quebec — Kruger has partnered with the Fondation Trois-Rivières Durable to acquire and permanently protect the Boisé des Estacades, preserving one of the region’s important urban green spaces while ensuring continued public access for recreation.
Under the agreement, Kruger and the foundation will become co-owners of the woodland with support from the City of Trois-Rivières and Desjardins. The initiative secures the long-term conservation of approximately 3.2 million square feet (297,000 square metres) of forest located along the banks of the Saint-Maurice River.
Woodland to Be Renamed Grand boisé Kruger
As part of the partnership, the site will be renamed Grand boisé Kruger in recognition of the company’s contribution to the conservation project.
The Fondation Trois-Rivières Durable will be responsible for managing the site’s environmental protection, stewardship and long-term conservation while maintaining year-round public access for outdoor recreation.
The preserved woodland provides residents with opportunities for walking, cycling, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities throughout the year.
Public-Private Partnership Supports Conservation
The project brings together private industry, a non-profit organization and municipal partners to protect natural areas within an urban environment.
Nicolas Pasian, General Manager of the Fondation Trois-Rivières Durable, said the collaboration demonstrates the value of joint action between public and private organizations.
“This project demonstrates when public and private partners work together, great things can be achieved for the common good.”
Kruger Reinforces Community Commitment
Kruger, one of Canada’s leading pulp and paper producers, has operated in Trois-Rivières for more than five decades.
Co-President Gene Kruger said supporting the conservation initiative reflects the company’s long-term commitment to the local community.
“Kruger has been part of the Trois-Rivières community for more than 50 years. It is important for us to make a meaningful contribution to its quality of life.”
The project aligns with growing efforts by forest products companies to invest in biodiversity conservation, community engagement and environmental stewardship alongside their industrial operations.
