Guangdong Lee & Man Paper Co., Ltd. has announced a RMB 720 million investment to modernize its PM7 paper machine, aiming to improve product quality, production efficiency and competitiveness in the growing market for premium lightweight containerboard.
The project will be carried out at the company’s existing mill in Guangdong and focuses on upgrading equipment rather than expanding production capacity. Once completed, the annual capacity of the PM7 line will remain at 300,000 tonnes, while the mill’s total papermaking capacity will continue at 2.1 million tonnes per year.
Upgrade Targets Premium Lightweight Kraft Linerboard
Before the modernization, PM7 produced kraft linerboard with basis weights ranging from 120 to 250 g/m² using a 6,600 mm-wide paper machine.
Following the upgrade, the production line will manufacture premium lightweight and medium-weight kraft linerboard with basis weights between 60 and 160 g/m², allowing the mill to better serve demand for lighter packaging grades while optimizing product specifications and raw material utilization.
The company said the project reflects increasing market demand for high-quality lightweight containerboard used in corrugated packaging.
Wider Machine and Higher Operating Speeds
As part of the modernization, the PM7 paper machine will receive several major technical upgrades.
Key improvements include:
- Increasing machine width from 6,600 mm to 7,860 mm
- Raising operating speeds to improve manufacturing efficiency
- Reducing operating costs through enhanced machine performance
These modifications are intended to increase operational efficiency while maintaining the existing production capacity.
Stock Preparation System to Be Modernized
The project also includes a comprehensive upgrade of the stock preparation system with new papermaking equipment, including:
- New-generation pulpers
- Closed screening systems
- Double-disc refiners
- Advanced headboxes
- Film transfer size presses
- Supercalenders
- Additional process equipment
According to the company, the upgraded system is designed to preserve fiber length more effectively while producing a more uniform pulp. This is expected to improve key paper properties such as tear resistance and burst strength, helping support the production of higher-value packaging grades.
Focus on Product Value Rather Than Capacity Growth
Unlike many mill investment projects that add new production capacity, the PM7 modernization focuses on improving manufacturing capability within the existing asset base.
By upgrading papermaking technology and optimizing process efficiency, Lee & Man Paper aims to strengthen its position in the premium lightweight containerboard market while responding to changing customer requirements for lighter, high-performance packaging materials.
For the containerboard industry, the project reflects an ongoing trend toward machine modernization, higher-value paper grades and efficiency improvements, as producers seek to enhance product performance and reduce manufacturing costs without increasing overall market capacity.
