The Cowlitz County coroner’s office has released causes of death for 10 of the 11 workers killed in the Longview pulp and paper mill disaster.
Officials said all 10 workers died from chemical burns after a tank imploded at the mill on May 26, releasing large volumes of caustic white liquor.
Additional Injuries Reported
One victim also suffered blunt force injuries, while another died partly from asphyxia due to aspiration of a foreign object.
The incident injured nearly 20 people, including workers who later sought medical treatment.
What Is White Liquor?
White liquor is a highly caustic chemical used in kraft pulping to break down wood into pulp. Exposure can cause severe chemical burns and deep tissue damage.
Industry Significance
The disaster is one of Washington state’s deadliest industrial incidents in a century and is expected to intensify scrutiny of chemical storage, tank inspection, emergency response and process safety systems in pulp and paper mills.
