luxury packaging design

Luxury packaging has traditionally been associated with elaborate unboxing experiences, premium materials and a sense of exclusivity. But according to packaging specialist Delta Global, the future of luxury may depend less on excess and more on intention.

As sustainability expectations reshape the fashion and beauty industries, brands are increasingly rethinking how packaging can deliver memorable experiences while reducing environmental impact.

Packaging as Part of the Luxury Experience

For luxury consumers, packaging often creates the first physical interaction with a brand.

The weight of a box, the texture of paper, and the reveal of a product all contribute to emotional connection and brand perception.

Robert Lockyer, founder of UK-based luxury packaging company Delta Global, believes these moments remain essential.

Rather than eliminating premium experiences, brands are being challenged to deliver them more responsibly.

Simplicity Requires Engineering

While luxury packaging often appears effortless, Lockyer says significant technical expertise sits behind seemingly simple designs.

He argues that novelty without purpose can create unnecessary complexity, overproduction and waste.

Instead, every design element should justify its existence through functionality, aesthetics or customer value.

Sustainable Materials Gain Ground

Founded in 2007, Delta Global works with fashion and retail brands including:

  • MECCA
  • Aje
  • Zimmermann
  • NET-A-PORTER
  • Fortnum & Mason
  • Harvey Nichols
  • END.

The company has focused heavily on lower-impact packaging solutions, including:

  • FSC®-certified papers
  • Recycled materials
  • Mono-material constructions
  • Reusable packaging formats

According to its 2025 Impact Report, more than 75% of Delta Global’s product lines now incorporate recycled content, Better Cotton Initiative cotton or FSC®-certified materials.

B Corp Recognition Reflects Industry Shift

Delta Global also achieved B Corp certification in 2025, earning a score of 95.5.

The milestone reflects a broader transformation occurring across the luxury sector, where environmental performance is increasingly viewed as part of brand value rather than a compromise.

Better, Not More

Lockyer believes the next phase of luxury packaging will prioritise restraint.

As regulations tighten and consumer expectations evolve, the industry’s challenge is no longer creating increasingly elaborate packaging experiences, but delivering experiences that are both meaningful and responsible.

His vision for the future is simple:

Create less packaging, but make it better.

Industry Outlook

Luxury brands are facing growing pressure to balance premium customer experiences with circular economy principles.

The rise of sustainable luxury packaging suggests that craftsmanship, quality and environmental responsibility are no longer competing priorities. Instead, they may define the next generation of luxury brand experiences.
