Metsä Fibre will modernise the cooking system at its Kemi bioproduct mill in Finland to improve material efficiency, raw material flexibility and production reliability.
The project will be carried out with Andritz, with start-up scheduled for Q4 2026.
Why the Upgrade Matters
The cooking system is a core part of pulp production. It chemically treats wood chips under heat and pressure to separate fibres for pulp manufacturing.
Modernising this system can help improve:
- fibre yield
- raw material efficiency
- production stability
- energy performance
- flexibility in wood raw material use
Strategic Importance for Kemi
Metsä Fibre says the upgrade will support the mill’s planned production levels and improve availability at one of Metsä Group’s key industrial sites.
The Kemi bioproduct mill plays a central role in Metsä Fibre’s pulp production network and supplies global pulp markets.
Industry Insight
Nordic pulp producers are increasingly investing in process optimisation rather than only capacity expansion.
For mills facing higher costs and tougher global competition, improvements in cooking efficiency, raw material flexibility and operational reliability can directly strengthen long-term competitiveness.
