Mondelēz sustainable packaging

CHICAGO — Mondelēz International has reported significant progress toward its sustainable packaging targets, with 96% of its packaging now designed for recyclability and an 11.5% reduction in virgin plastic use compared with 2020 levels, exceeding its original 2025 target ahead of schedule.

The achievements were outlined in the company’s “Snacking Made Right 2025” Sustainability Report, which also introduces updated packaging targets extending through 2030.

Recyclable Packaging Reaches 96%

According to the report, approximately 96% of Mondelēz’s packaging was designed for recycling by the end of 2025.

The company has set a new objective of increasing this figure to more than 98% by 2030 as it continues redesigning packaging across its global portfolio.

Meanwhile, the use of virgin plastic has fallen by 11.5% from the 2020 baseline, more than doubling the company’s original commitment to achieve a 5% reduction by 2025.

Recycled Content Continues to Increase

Mondelēz reported that 3.7% of the plastic used in its packaging came from recycled sources in 2025.

The company now aims to increase recycled plastic content to 5% by 2030 as recycling infrastructure and material availability continue to improve.

Packaging Targets Extended to 2030

While progress has been made, Mondelēz acknowledged that several packaging objectives have been extended to 2030.

The company cited several factors behind the revised timeline, including:

  • Evolving packaging regulations
  • Changing consumer and customer requirements
  • Technical complexity of new packaging solutions
  • Slower development of circular economy infrastructure

These factors have affected targets related to recyclable packaging, recycled content, and virgin plastic reduction in rigid plastic packaging.

Three-Pillar Packaging Strategy

Mondelēz said its sustainable packaging strategy focuses on three key priorities:

The company participates in several collaborative initiatives, including the US Flexible Film Initiative, the UK Flexible Plastic Fund, and HolyGrail 2030, which aims to improve plastic sorting and recycling across Europe.

Circular Packaging Remains Long-Term Priority

Mondelēz said continued advances in packaging materials, recycled plastics, recycling infrastructure and public policy will be essential to achieving a more circular packaging economy.

The company noted that packaging innovation will remain a central component of its broader sustainability strategy as it works toward its 2030 environmental commitments.
