Mondelēz World Travel Retail says sustainability is becoming part of the premium value proposition in duty free and travel retail, where packaging, sourcing and product trust all influence fast purchase decisions.
The update follows Mondelēz International’s 2025 sustainability progress report, Snacking Made Right.
Packaging Becomes Part of the Premium Story
Mondelēz says around 96% of its packaging is designed to be recyclable.
By 2025, the company also achieved:
- 11.5% reduction in virgin plastic versus 2020
- 3.7% recycled content across its portfolio
- up to 80% recycled plastic in gifting chocolate trays for Milka, Marabou and Suchard in Europe
- around 850 tonnes of virgin plastic eliminated
For travel retail, this matters because packaging must work as both protection and presentation, especially for gifting products.
Cocoa Sourcing Supports Brand Trust
Mondelēz sources 100% of cocoa volume for its chocolate business through Cocoa Life, covering more than 257,000 registered farmers across eight cocoa-producing countries.
This gives brands such as Toblerone, Cadbury and Milka a clearer sourcing story for premium shoppers.
Climate and Supply Chain Progress
Mondelēz says it has reduced value-chain greenhouse gas emissions by 21% versus 2018, against a target of 35%.
The company also highlights its Harmony wheat programme in Europe, involving:
- 1,200 farmers, cooperatives and millers
- 56,800 hectares of land
- support for an estimated 6.7 million bees and 27 butterfly species
Travel Retail Insight
In travel retail, sustainability is no longer separate from brand desirability. For chocolate and snack brands, premium value increasingly depends on:
- recyclable packaging
- responsible sourcing
- gifting presentation
- portion control
- product safety
- supply chain reliability
