Myanmar bamboo pulp production

Myanmar is exploring the use of bamboo as a papermaking raw material, with Yeni Paper Mill conducting laboratory trials to evaluate pulp production from different bamboo varieties.

The research forms part of broader efforts to strengthen domestic paper manufacturing, expand local raw material sources and support the development of the country’s small and medium-sized manufacturing sector.

Laboratory Trials Evaluate Bamboo Fiber

The pulp production trials are being carried out at the laboratory of Yeni Paper Mill in Bago Region, where researchers are testing the pulping performance of various bamboo species.

During a recent site visit, Union Minister for Industry and MSME Development Dr. Charlie Than reviewed the ongoing research and encouraged the technical team to maintain comprehensive records throughout the testing process.

The minister also emphasized the importance of assessing the commercial feasibility of bamboo pulp production before moving toward larger-scale manufacturing.

Focus on Technology Transfer

Beyond laboratory research, the government is seeking to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities.

Officials were instructed to prepare for the transfer of successful pulp production technologies to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), helping expand domestic participation in Myanmar’s paper industry.

The minister also called for technical support to develop local production of digesters, one of the key processing systems used in pulp manufacturing.

Mill Visits Highlight Paper Manufacturing Development

As part of the inspection program, the minister visited several manufacturing facilities involved in paper and packaging production, including:

  • The 20-tonne-per-day Yeni Paper Mill, producing packaging paper.
  • KKN Tissue.
  • Golden Bamboo Chopstick Enterprise.
  • The 50-tonne-per-day YDE Pulp and Paper Company Limited facility, where machinery installation is underway.
  • A local rice milling operation operated by Kyaw Moe Naing Family.

During the visits, officials discussed operational challenges with business owners and reviewed ongoing industrial development activities.

Bamboo Gains Attention as Alternative Fiber Source

Bamboo has attracted increasing interest as an alternative papermaking fiber due to its relatively rapid growth and widespread availability across many Asian countries.

Compared with traditional wood fiber, bamboo offers several potential advantages:

  • Fast regeneration.
  • Short harvesting cycles.
  • Locally available raw material.
  • Potential to diversify fiber supply.

Its suitability for commercial paper production depends on factors including fiber characteristics, processing efficiency and overall production costs.

Supporting Local Paper Manufacturing

The bamboo pulp trials reflect Myanmar’s broader interest in strengthening domestic paper production through greater use of locally available resources and manufacturing technologies.

If the research demonstrates commercial viability, bamboo could become an additional fiber source for paper manufacturers while supporting technology development for local enterprises.

As global paper producers continue exploring alternative fiber resources alongside conventional wood pulp and recycled fiber, bamboo remains an area of growing interest for countries seeking to improve raw material security and expand sustainable paper manufacturing capacity.
