Businesses across Nigeria’s packaging sector are being encouraged to invest in digital printing technologies and sustainable packaging as rising consumer demand, expanding e-commerce and export opportunities reshape the country’s packaging market.
The message was delivered during Flexo Edge 2026, a packaging and printing conference held in Lagos, where industry leaders and government officials said companies that delay modernization risk losing competitiveness as packaging technologies and sustainability expectations continue to evolve.
Digital Printing Supports Flexible Production
Industry participants highlighted digital printing as one of the key technologies driving the next phase of packaging development.
According to Guenter Franz, General Manager of VIP Systems, digital printing allows manufacturers to produce economically viable short production runs that are often difficult to achieve using conventional printing methods.
The technology is particularly suited to packaging applications requiring:
- Short production runs
- Faster product launches
- Greater customization
- Reduced inventory
- Lower production waste
Franz said continued investment in digital printing will be essential for companies seeking to remain competitive as market demand becomes more diversified.
Flexographic Printing Expands Market Access
Conference organizers also emphasized the growing role of flexographic printing in Nigeria’s packaging industry.
Olakunle Ogunjobi, Technical Director of RandomSoft Limited, said flexographic technology offers lower production volumes and reduced initial investment compared with traditional gravure printing while maintaining high print quality.
He noted that the technology allows manufacturers to respond more efficiently to changing consumer demand without requiring large production runs.
Sustainability Becomes Industry Priority
Environmental performance was another major focus of the conference.
Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, said future packaging development must balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.
She highlighted several priorities for the industry, including:
- Lightweight packaging
- Recyclable materials
- Circular economy practices
- Material recovery systems
- Support for small businesses involved in recycling
According to Oshodi, strengthening packaging sustainability can improve transportation efficiency while reducing environmental impacts across the packaging value chain.
Export Opportunities Depend on Better Packaging
Speakers also identified packaging quality as an important factor supporting Nigeria’s export growth.
Franz noted that many Nigerian food products already meet international quality expectations but often require higher-quality packaging to satisfy overseas market requirements.
He suggested that combining sustainable packaging with digital printing could help local manufacturers improve product presentation while enabling more flexible production for export markets.
Population Growth Drives Packaging Demand
With Nigeria’s population exceeding 220 million, industry representatives believe long-term demand for packaging will continue to increase.
Growth is expected to be supported by:
- Food manufacturing
- Consumer goods
- E-commerce
- Retail expansion
- Export-oriented production
Industry leaders also pointed to increasing investment interest from international companies, with participants from Germany, China, India, Belgium and Spain attending the conference.
Modernization Seen as Key to Future Competitiveness
For Nigeria’s packaging industry, the conference highlighted the growing importance of combining digital manufacturing, flexible printing technologies and sustainable packaging design.
As demand for customized packaging and environmentally responsible products continues to expand, industry participants believe investments in modern printing equipment, recyclable packaging materials and circular economy initiatives will play an increasingly important role in strengthening the country’s packaging sector and supporting future industrial growth.
