North American lumber prices

North American softwood lumber prices strengthened in late June as Douglas-fir, hemlock-fir, and Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) posted notable gains, while plywood prices also showed signs of improving demand.

According to the latest Madison’s Lumber Reporter, several key lumber grades moved higher during the week ending June 26, reflecting firmer market conditions across both Western and Southern North American lumber markets.

Benchmark SPF Holds Firm at $500

The benchmark Western Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF) 2×4 #2&Btr KD remained unchanged at US$500 per thousand board feet (mfbm) compared with the previous week.

Although prices were flat week over week, the benchmark continued its gradual recovery:

  • Up US$10 (2%) from one month earlier
  • Up US$20 (4%) compared with the same week in 2025
  • Up US$144 (40%) compared with two years ago

The stable pricing suggests that Western SPF has maintained support despite seasonal market fluctuations.

Southern Yellow Pine Extends Rally

Southern Yellow Pine continued to outperform many other lumber species.

The price of Southern Yellow Pine East Side 2×4 #2&Btr KD increased to US$536/mfbm, gaining US$18 (3%) from the previous week.

Year-over-year performance remained particularly strong:

  • 34% higher than the same week last year
  • 51% above price levels recorded two years ago

The continued strength reflects steady demand for Southern Pine products across residential construction and industrial applications.

Fir Products Show Stronger Demand

Madison’s market report also noted improving pricing for Douglas-fir and hemlock-fir products.

At the same time, plywood markets displayed what the publication described as “sneaky strength,” indicating improving pricing trends despite relatively limited market attention.

The gains suggest buyers remain active across multiple structural wood products as construction demand and inventory management continue to influence purchasing decisions.

Market Outlook

Although benchmark SPF prices have stabilized, stronger performance in Douglas-fir, hemlock-fir and Southern Yellow Pine indicates that regional demand remains resilient.

With lumber prices remaining well above levels seen two years ago, producers continue to monitor housing activity, inventory levels and seasonal buying patterns as key factors influencing the North American wood products market during the second half of 2026.
