Rapids Paper + Packaging is expanding its ECOVA portfolio with new heat-sealable and functional barrier paper packaging solutions, targeting brands that want to reduce plastic use without rebuilding their existing packaging operations.
The development is interesting because the next challenge for paper-based flexible packaging is no longer only “Can paper replace plastic?”
The harder question is:
Can paper deliver the same production efficiency, product protection and commercial scalability that plastic films provide today?
Moving Paper Packaging From Concept to Production
The new ECOVA Barrier line combines heat-sealable paper structures with moisture barrier performance. Rapids says the material achieves a moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) below 10 g/m²/day, expanding potential applications where basic paper packaging may not provide enough protection.
The company also highlights compatibility with existing flexible packaging equipment, including vertical form-fill-seal, horizontal form-fill-seal and pouching systems.
This point is important.
Many packaging innovations fail not because the material does not work, but because converting companies and brands cannot easily integrate them into existing production lines.
By focusing on rollstock, premade pouches and existing equipment compatibility, Rapids is addressing one of the biggest barriers for sustainable packaging adoption: industrial transition cost.
What This Tells Us About the Market
The packaging industry is moving away from simple material substitution.
Replacing a plastic film with paper is not enough.
Future packaging solutions need to balance:
- barrier performance,
- machine compatibility,
- product shelf life,
- recycling requirements,
- and manufacturing economics.
Rapids’ ECOVA expansion reflects a broader industry trend: companies are trying to develop paper-based flexible packaging that behaves more like conventional plastic structures while maintaining fibre-based advantages.
The Bigger Challenge Ahead
However, paper-based flexible packaging still faces application limits.
High-moisture, high-barrier and long shelf-life products often require advanced structures, coatings or additional layers. Each solution must be evaluated based on the product, supply chain and end-of-life system.
The future of sustainable flexible packaging is unlikely to be a single replacement material.
Instead, the market may move toward a wider range of engineered solutions — including recyclable plastics, coated papers, bio-based materials and hybrid structures — depending on the performance requirements of each application.
Rapids’ ECOVA development shows that the competition is no longer only between paper and plastic.
It is becoming a competition between packaging systems that can deliver performance, sustainability and scalability at the same time.
