Mondi has partnered with Swiss Krono to replace plastic-based packaging for laminate flooring products with paper, demonstrating how fiber-based solutions can meet demanding industrial packaging requirements while improving sustainability performance.

The collaboration introduces Mondi’s kraft paper grades into Swiss Krono’s German operations, replacing plastic shrink and stretch films traditionally used for flooring protection and pallet stabilization.

Paper Replaces Plastic Across Two Packaging Stages

Swiss Krono adopted two of Mondi’s packaging solutions:

• Eco/Vantage Kraft Pro for wrapping boxed laminate flooring panels.
• Ad/Vantage StretchWrap for securing palletized loads.

Together, the solutions eliminate plastic shrink film and stretch wrap previously used throughout the packaging process.

High-Strength Paper for Primary Packaging

For tray wrapping, Swiss Krono now uses Eco/Vantage Kraft Pro, a high-strength kraft paper containing 20% recycled content.

The material:

• Wraps trays containing 10 laminate panels.
• Provides high puncture resistance to protect product edges.
• Is recyclable through conventional paper waste streams.
• Supports in-house printing of branding and instructions.

According to Mondi’s internal product impact assessment, the paper solution delivers lower CO2e emissions than conventional polyethylene shrink film.

Improved Customer Experience

The packaging transition also provides practical benefits beyond sustainability.

Because paper allows wooden flooring panels to breathe during transport, customers can install products immediately upon delivery.

Previously, plastic-wrapped products often required a 24-hour acclimatization period before installation.

Recyclable Paper Stretch Wrap for Pallets

Swiss Krono also introduced Ad/Vantage StretchWrap to stabilize palletized loads.

The 70 gsm kraft paper offers:

• High stretch performance
• Tear resistance
• Load stability
• Compatibility with dedicated PaperWrap machinery

Produced from 100% kraft paper, the solution contains no plastic coating and is recyclable within standard European paper recycling streams.

Mondi reported significant CO2e reductions compared with traditional plastic stretch wrap.

Production Efficiency Gains

The new packaging setup also streamlined Swiss Krono’s operations.
