At interpack 2026, Hugo Beck has introduced the Paper S sleeve wrapper, developed together with Mondi as an alternative to plastic shrink film and heavy cardboard transport packaging.
The new system reflects a broader packaging trend:
👉 reducing secondary packaging material without sacrificing transport performance or line efficiency.
Paper Instead of Shrink Film
The Paper S applies a tight kraft paper wrap around products, either with or without trays.
The system uses:
- overlap wrapping
- optimized hot-melt gluing
- paper-based bundling
to secure products during transport and handling.
The machine is designed to replace:
- shrink film systems
- excessive corrugated transport packaging
while maintaining packaging stability.
Compact Design and Lower Energy Demand
Unlike traditional shrink-wrapping systems, the Paper S avoids heat tunnels, helping reduce energy consumption.
The machine can operate:
- as a standalone unit
- or inline within existing production systems
Hugo Beck says the compact footprint is particularly suitable for factories with limited production space.
Mondi’s StretchWrap Paper Supports the System
At Interpack, the machine is running with Mondi’s 70 gsm Ad/Vantage StretchWrap paper.
The kraft paper is designed to offer:
- puncture resistance
- tensile energy absorption
- stretchability
- recyclability in standard paper streams
- industrial compostability
The machine and substrate were reportedly co-developed to ensure compatibility and stable machine performance.
Industry Shift Toward Paper-Based Secondary Packaging
The launch highlights how secondary and transport packaging are becoming a major target for plastic reduction strategies.
For FMCG and retail-ready packaging operations, companies increasingly want solutions that can:
- lower plastic use
- reduce corrugated consumption
- improve sustainability metrics
- maintain pallet stability
- avoid major line redesigns
Strategic Industry Insight
One of the most important aspects of the Paper S is not the paper itself — it is the system integration.
Historically, replacing shrink film with paper often created challenges around:
- machine compatibility
- bundle stability
- throughput speed
- packaging consistency
By developing machinery and substrate together, Hugo Beck and Mondi are trying to reduce those adoption barriers.
Final Thought
The Paper S reflects a growing direction in packaging:
secondary packaging is moving away from “more material for protection” toward smarter material engineering and integrated machine-paper systems.
As EPR regulations and sustainability targets tighten, paper-based transport packaging may increasingly compete directly with shrink film in high-volume FMCG applications.
