CALIFORNIA, U.S. — Petalscape, a new wine brand from Scout & Cellar, has launched two California wines in Frugalpac’s Frugal Bottle, reflecting growing interest in lower-carbon packaging within the U.S. wine industry.
The launch includes a 2025 Sauvignon Blanc and an NV Red Blend, both packaged in paper bottles manufactured in King City, California by Monterey Wine Company using Frugalpac’s bottle assembly technology.
Paper Bottles Gain Momentum in the U.S. Wine Market
The introduction marks another step in the expansion of paper-based wine packaging in the United States.
According to Frugalpac, the Frugal Bottle has already been adopted by several U.S. retailers and wine producers as companies seek alternatives to conventional glass bottles that reduce packaging-related carbon emissions.
The company says the bottle is made from:
- 94% recycled paperboard
- A food-grade inner pouch
Compared with a conventional glass wine bottle, the Frugal Bottle is reported to be:
- Around five times lighter
- Able to reduce carbon emissions by up to 84%
- Manufactured using approximately five times less water and energy
Packaging Supports Sustainability Goals
Growing environmental regulations and corporate sustainability targets are encouraging beverage producers to evaluate alternative packaging formats alongside recycled glass and lightweight containers.
Lower-weight packaging can help reduce transportation emissions while also improving handling and distribution efficiency.
Paper-based bottles are one of several emerging formats being evaluated as wine producers look to reduce the environmental footprint of packaging without changing the product itself.
Local Production Expands Manufacturing Capacity
The Petalscape bottles were produced domestically by Monterey Wine Company, which manufactures Frugal Bottles in California using Frugalpac’s assembly equipment.
Local production allows wineries to source paper bottles within the United States, reducing transportation requirements for packaging components while supporting broader adoption of alternative bottle formats.
Consumer Interest Drives Alternative Packaging
The Petalscape wines are being introduced through Scout & Cellar’s direct-to-consumer sales network and promotional events designed to showcase the benefits of paper packaging for outdoor occasions where glass may be less practical.
The launch reflects broader consumer interest in packaging that combines convenience with lower environmental impact, as wineries continue exploring recyclable and lightweight packaging solutions.
As sustainability becomes a larger factor in purchasing decisions, paper bottles are emerging as one option among several designed to reduce packaging emissions while supporting circular economy objectives in the beverage sector.
