LONDON — ResponsibleGlass has published the first draft of its International Standard for Glassmaking, launching a 60-day public consultation on what could become the glass industry’s first global sustainability certification and labeling framework.
The proposed standard aims to establish a unified, independently verifiable framework for responsible glass production, addressing environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance across the entire glass value chain.
Industry Seeks Common Sustainability Framework
According to ResponsibleGlass, global glass production generates approximately 95 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, yet the industry currently lacks an internationally recognized sustainability standard comparable to those adopted in sectors such as steel and forestry.
The draft standard is designed to provide consistent requirements covering raw material sourcing, energy use, glass manufacturing, product design and recycling.
Following the consultation period, the organization plans to publish the final version of the standard in early 2027.
Six Core Areas for Certification
Under the proposed framework, companies seeking ResponsibleGlass certification would undergo independent third-party audits to demonstrate compliance across six key sustainability areas.
The draft standard includes requirements for:
- Sustainability management systems and governance
- Responsible sourcing of raw and recycled materials
- Greenhouse gas emissions and energy management
- Water stewardship, biodiversity and pollution control
- Circularity, recycled content and end-of-life recycling
- Worker health and safety, human rights and stakeholder engagement
The framework also promotes supply chain transparency, requiring companies to monitor and disclose the sustainability performance of materials such as silica sand, soda ash, recovered glass and energy inputs.
Standard Supports Circular Economy
ResponsibleGlass said the proposed standard encourages increased use of recycled glass, improved collection and recovery systems, and product designs that reduce environmental impacts throughout the glass lifecycle.
The framework also proposes common methodologies for measuring and reporting carbon emissions, recycled content and responsible sourcing, creating a foundation for a future certification and labeling system that enables more consistent sustainability comparisons across the industry.
Multi-Stakeholder Development Process
The draft standard was developed through collaboration among glass manufacturers, raw material suppliers, recyclers, sustainability experts, civil society organizations and industry associations.
Technical working groups focused on responsible sourcing, greenhouse gas emissions, circularity and downstream certification contributed to the development of the initial framework.
ResponsibleGlass is now inviting feedback from manufacturers, suppliers, customers, policymakers, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders during the consultation period.
Industry Collaboration Continues
Launched in December 2025, ResponsibleGlass is a not-for-profit sustainability initiative bringing together companies from across the global glass value chain.
The organization currently includes 23 founding members and supporters, representing more than 150,000 employees and approximately US$90 billion in annual revenue.
Supporters say the proposed standard could help improve transparency, accelerate decarbonization and establish a globally recognized benchmark for responsible glassmaking as sustainability expectations continue to grow across manufacturing industries.
