Sitma FlatPack

Italian packaging automation specialist Sitma has launched FlatPack, an automated paper-based primary packaging solution designed to replace plastic wrapping for furniture panels in industrial manufacturing.

Developed in collaboration with a global furniture manufacturer, the new system combines paper packaging, automation and logistics optimization to help furniture producers reduce plastic use while maintaining production efficiency and product protection.

The launch reflects the growing demand for fibre-based packaging solutions as manufacturers across multiple industries seek alternatives to conventional plastic packaging.

Automated Paper Packaging for Furniture Production

FlatPack has been engineered as a primary packaging system that wraps furniture panels using paper instead of plastic film.

According to Sitma, the system operates in continuous motion and produces fit-to-size paper packaging, helping manufacturers reduce excess packaging material while creating compact packages that support efficient transport and storage.

The packaging geometry folds inward, allowing more stable pallet loads and improved space utilization throughout warehousing and distribution.

For furniture manufacturers handling high production volumes, packaging efficiency can directly influence logistics costs, pallet density and transportation performance.

Multiple Packaging Operations Combined in One Line

Beyond wrapping, FlatPack integrates several packaging functions into a single automated process.

The system can automatically insert:

  • Assembly instructions
  • Product leaflets
  • Hardware kits
  • Assembly toolboxes

By consolidating these operations into one workflow, manufacturers can ensure all components remain together throughout distribution while reducing manual handling during packaging.

This integrated approach also supports higher levels of packaging consistency in automated production environments.

Designed for Industrial-Scale Manufacturing

One of the challenges facing paper-based packaging is achieving the durability required for industrial logistics.

Sitma says FlatPack has been developed to provide reliable protection during storage, transportation and retail handling while maintaining a clean and consistent package appearance.

Unlike some alternative paper packaging concepts aimed primarily at reducing plastic use, FlatPack focuses equally on operational performance, making it suitable for large-scale furniture manufacturing lines.

The system is also designed to integrate with existing automated packaging equipment and accommodate different furniture panel dimensions without disrupting production flow.

Paper Packaging Creates New Branding Opportunities

Replacing plastic film with printable paper also allows manufacturers to use the package itself as a communication platform.

Product information, assembly instructions, branding elements and sustainability messages can all be printed directly onto the paper packaging, potentially reducing the need for additional labels or printed inserts.

As more brands seek to improve both packaging sustainability and customer communication, printable fibre-based packaging is becoming an increasingly attractive option.

Supporting the Shift Away from Plastic Packaging

Stefano De Marco, CEO of Tecnau and Sitma, said FlatPack demonstrates that manufacturers no longer need to choose between sustainability and industrial productivity.

According to De Marco, the system enables furniture producers to eliminate plastic from primary packaging while maintaining the efficiency, product protection and production scalability required in modern manufacturing and logistics operations.

Industry Outlook

Manufacturers across the furniture sector are facing increasing pressure to reduce plastic packaging while maintaining packaging performance and controlling operating costs.

Solutions such as FlatPack highlight how packaging automation is evolving beyond simple material replacement to integrate paper-based packaging, logistics optimization and production efficiency within a single system.

For packaging converters, machinery suppliers and furniture manufacturers, the continued development of automated fibre-based packaging technologies may accelerate the transition toward lower-plastic packaging without compromising industrial productivity or supply chain performance.
