Südpack Medica France expansion

Südpack Medica has officially opened an expanded production facility in Coulmer, France, strengthening its manufacturing capacity for pharmaceutical primary packaging and sterile barrier systems while accelerating the development of recyclable packaging solutions that comply with the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

The investment responds to growing demand from the pharmaceutical, medical device and life sciences sectors for high-performance packaging manufactured under strict cleanroom conditions.

Cleanroom Capacity Nearly Doubled

The expansion significantly increases Südpack Medica’s production capabilities by nearly doubling the site’s ISO Class 7 and ISO Class 8 cleanroom areas.

The Coulmer facility supports the complete manufacturing process, from film production to finished sterile packaging, enabling high-volume production while maintaining stringent requirements for:

  • Product quality
  • Sterility
  • Process control
  • Particulate cleanliness
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Supply reliability

According to Südpack Medica, the expansion reflects the company’s long-term commitment to supporting Europe’s pharmaceutical and medical packaging industry.

Supporting PPWR-Compliant Packaging Development

Beyond expanding production capacity, the French site will play an important role in developing packaging solutions aligned with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

The company is advancing recyclable mono-polyethylene (mono-PE) packaging concepts designed to replace conventional multilayer polyamide/PE laminates used in medical packaging.

These developments aim to improve recyclability while maintaining the barrier performance required for pharmaceutical and healthcare applications.

Focus on Sterile Medical Packaging

Production at the Coulmer facility centers on Südpack Medica’s MedGuard product portfolio, which includes sterile packaging for:

  • Medical implants
  • Surgical kits
  • Wound care products
  • Surgical textiles
  • Diagnostic applications

The site also manufactures header bags designed for large medical devices that require ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization.

Expanding Medical Packaging Services

The facility expansion follows several recent initiatives by Südpack Medica to strengthen its healthcare packaging business.

Earlier this year, the company introduced MedHub, a platform allowing customers to order pre-manufactured medical pouches in standardized sizes and batch quantities.

Südpack Medica has also collaborated with Dow and Sartorius to develop bioprocessing bags used in vaccine manufacturing and transportation, supporting critical pharmaceutical production processes.

Meeting Growing Healthcare Packaging Demand

Demand for sterile pharmaceutical packaging continues to increase as medical device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies require higher production capacity alongside stricter quality and regulatory standards.

By expanding its cleanroom manufacturing footprint and investing in recyclable packaging technologies, Südpack Medica aims to strengthen security of supply while supporting the healthcare industry’s transition toward more sustainable packaging solutions that meet future European regulatory requirements.
