sustainable packaging trends

The packaging industry is entering a new phase where sustainability is no longer only a corporate commitment but a requirement shaped by regulation, customer expectations and supply-chain pressure.

Governments worldwide are introducing stricter rules on packaging waste, recycled content and producer responsibility. Regulations such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the UK Plastic Packaging Tax and expanding Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes are pushing companies to rethink material choices and end-of-life solutions.

Fibre-based packaging is gaining attention as companies look for renewable alternatives to fossil-based plastics. However, the transition requires more than replacing materials. Packaging must still deliver strength, barrier performance, food protection and cost efficiency.

Leading producers are increasingly focusing on the full value chain — from responsible fibre sourcing and cleaner production to recycling systems and circular manufacturing.

APRIL, for example, has expanded its sustainability strategy through renewable energy, resource efficiency and fibre-based product development. In 2025, renewable and cleaner energy accounted for 38% of energy consumption across its Sumatra fibre operations, while installed solar capacity reached 39.4 MW.

The company is also developing paperboard solutions to support growing demand for renewable packaging materials.

The next stage of sustainable packaging will likely be defined by a balance between environmental performance and industrial practicality. Companies that can combine renewable materials, efficient manufacturing and circular solutions will be better positioned as packaging requirements continue to evolve.
