Voith MG specialty paper machine

ZHENJIANG, China — Voith has successfully started up PM 6, China’s first high-speed MG (Machine Glazed) specialty paper machine designed for low basis weight grades, at APP’s Jindong Dagang mill in Zhenjiang.

Completed two months ahead of schedule, the project marks a significant milestone for China’s specialty paper industry while strengthening APP’s production capacity for premium thermal paper and functional paper grades.

PM 6 Expands Specialty Paper Capacity

The new paper machine features a reel width of 4,970 mm and a design speed of 1,200 m/min.

PM 6 is designed to produce thermal base paper and MG specialty paper in basis weights ranging from 20 to 60 g/m², with an annual production capacity of 120,000 tonnes.

The investment supports growing demand for premium specialty papers used in thermal printing and other functional applications.

Fully Integrated Production Line

Voith supplied a complete production solution for the project, including its BlueLine stock preparation system and XcelLine paper machine.

The scope covers the entire production process, from stock preparation and approach flow systems through winding and rewinding.

According to Voith, the integrated system is designed to improve fiber processing efficiency, reduce energy consumption and deliver stable production performance.

Advanced Technology Supports Quality and Efficiency

PM 6 incorporates several advanced papermaking technologies designed to improve productivity and product quality.

Key technologies include:

  • IntensaPulper stock preparation system
  • MasterJet Pro headbox with dilution water control
  • Fourdrinier former with DuoFormer D II
  • Tandem NipcoFlex shoe press
  • TopDuoRun and CombiDuoRun drying systems
  • SpeedSizer surface sizing
  • EcoCal Soft calender
  • MasterReel and VariFlex NG winding systems

These technologies are intended to enhance formation, drying efficiency, surface quality and roll consistency while minimizing production losses.

Long-Term Partnership Continues

The project further strengthens the long-standing partnership between Voith and APP, which began in 1998.

Over the past two decades, Voith has supplied multiple paper machines and finishing systems to APP mills, including projects at Dagang, Guangxi and Hainan.

Several of these installations have achieved notable production milestones, including Dagang PM 3, which reached a world operating speed record of 1,810 m/min.

With demand continuing to grow for thermal papers and other specialty grades, the successful start-up of PM 6 is expected to enhance APP’s competitiveness while establishing a new benchmark for high-speed MG specialty paper production in China.
