Södra Mörrum green liquor system

Södra has successfully started a new green liquor processing system at its Mörrum pulp mill in Sweden, with the equipment supplied by Kadant Black Clawson in collaboration with Kadant Noss.

The project upgrades the mill’s chemical recovery operations through the installation of a green liquor clarifier (GLC) and dregs precoat filter (DPF).

The system was developed following an evaluation of operating conditions at the Mörrum site and was engineered around the mill’s specific process requirements.

Green Liquor Clarifier Handles 100 Liters per Second

At the center of the installation is Kadant’s green liquor clarifier, which has been designed to process 100 liters of green liquor per second.

Green liquor clarification is part of the chemical recovery cycle at a kraft pulp mill. Removing dregs and other impurities from green liquor before subsequent recausticizing stages can influence chemical recovery performance and the operation of downstream equipment.

The new clarifier incorporates Kadant’s Uniform Flow Design feedwell and Uniform Liquor Removal bustle pipe.

According to Kadant, the configuration is designed to produce clean green liquor while lowering the dregs dead load entering the liquor and lime mud circuits.

Reducing this unwanted material can support improved recausticizing efficiency and lower energy consumption.

Dregs Precoat Filter Recovers Green Liquor

The second major component is Kadant’s dregs precoat filter.

The equipment processes underflow from the green liquor clarifier, recovering additional green liquor while separating the remaining dregs into a filter cake.

According to Kadant, the resulting cake has low moisture and chemical content and is environmentally non-hazardous and suitable for landfill disposal.

Combining clarification and filtration allows the mill to recover chemicals while limiting the amount of liquor leaving the process with the separated dregs.

Kadant said the complete system is intended to provide high filtration capacity, efficient chemical recovery and operating cost savings.

Site-Specific Engineering for Mörrum

The project involved site-specific engineering as well as maintenance support from Kadant.

The supplier said the solution draws on its experience and the Goslin legacy in chemical pulp recausticizing systems.

Rather than supplying the clarification equipment as an isolated component, the project considered the mill’s existing operating environment and the interaction between green liquor clarification, dregs handling and chemical recovery.

Mörrum Mill Produces 470,000 Tonnes of Pulp Annually

Södra Cell Mörrum operates two pulp production lines with combined annual capacity of approximately 470,000 tonnes.

One production line manufactures a range of paper pulps.

The second produces dissolving pulp used in textile and other applications and is associated with Södra’s OnceMore® process, which combines textile waste with wood from sustainably managed forests to produce dissolving pulp.

The successful startup of the new green liquor system strengthens the chemical recovery infrastructure supporting these pulp operations.

For the Mörrum mill, the project is focused on a fundamental part of kraft pulp production: recovering chemicals efficiently while removing process impurities before they can create additional load elsewhere in the recovery cycle.
