Chinese paper producer Wuzhou Special Paper Group Co., Ltd. (605007) reported strong growth in the first half of 2026 as additional industrial packaging paper capacity came online and profitability improved across most of its paper grades.
Net profit attributable to shareholders reached RMB 230 million ($32 million), an increase of 88.95% year on year, according to results released on August 7.
First-half revenue increased 18.76% to RMB 4.895 billion, while net profit excluding non-recurring items rose 96.87% to RMB 226 million.
The relatively small difference between reported and adjusted profit indicates that the improvement was driven predominantly by the company’s underlying operations rather than one-off gains.
Paper Production Reaches 1.2 Million Tonnes
Higher production and sales volumes were major contributors to the first-half performance.
Wuzhou Special Paper produced 1.2042 million tonnes of paper during the six-month period, up 17.63% from a year earlier.
Sales increased even faster, rising 23.13% to 1.2155 million tonnes.
The figures show sales volumes slightly exceeding production during the period, indicating that the company was also drawing on existing inventories while expanding shipments.
Increasing production capacity at the company’s Hubei manufacturing base was a major factor behind the higher volumes.
Hubei Packaging Paper Lines Reach Full-Scale Operation
Wuzhou Special Paper said its industrial packaging paper production lines in Hubei reached full-scale operation during the first half.
The additional capacity significantly increased production and sales volumes and created a new source of revenue growth for the company.
Industrial packaging paper has become increasingly important within Wuzhou Special Paper’s broader product portfolio as the company expands beyond its established specialty paper operations.
The capacity ramp-up also came during an improving period for China’s waste-paper-based packaging paper market.
According to the company’s assessment, containerboard and corrugated paper were among the stronger-performing segments of the Chinese paper industry during the first half of 2026.
Profitability Improves Across Most Paper Grades
Higher volumes were not the only contributor to earnings growth.
Wuzhou Special Paper said profitability improved year on year across nearly all of its paper grades, with only a small number of exceptions.
This matters because capacity expansion can increase revenue without necessarily improving earnings when paper prices or production margins are weak.
In Wuzhou’s case, higher output was accompanied by stronger profitability across much of the portfolio.
The company identified three main factors behind its earnings improvement:
- Full-scale operation of industrial packaging paper capacity in Hubei
- Improved profitability across most paper grades
- Tighter cost controls to reduce the impact of market volatility
The combination helped adjusted first-half profit grow faster than revenue.
Cost Controls Support Earnings Growth
Cost management was another important part of the first-half performance.
Paper manufacturers continue to operate in a market influenced by fluctuations in recovered paper, market pulp, energy, chemicals and transportation costs.
Wuzhou Special Paper said tighter cost controls helped offset some of this volatility and strengthen its earnings base.
The 96.87% increase in profit excluding non-recurring items, compared with revenue growth of 18.76%, indicates a significant improvement in underlying profitability during the period.
China’s Paper Market Shows Diverging Trends
Wuzhou Special Paper described a Chinese paper market in which individual grades performed quite differently during the first half of 2026.
According to the company’s assessment, waste-paper-based packaging grades experienced a V-shaped recovery, while wood-pulp-based commodity papers continued to fluctuate around relatively weak market levels.
Containerboard and corrugated paper recorded comparatively stronger conditions.
Specialty paper maintained more stable growth, supported by resilient demand in its downstream applications.
Other segments remained more challenging.
White cardboard stayed near the bottom of its market cycle, while cultural and printing papers operated on thin margins or around break-even levels.
Tissue paper remained comparatively stable, supported by its essential consumer applications.
These differences underline the importance of product mix for diversified paper producers.
Specialty Paper Demand Remains Resilient
Despite uneven conditions across China’s broader paper industry, Wuzhou Special Paper said specialty paper continued to benefit from relatively resilient demand.
Specialty grades typically serve more specific applications than commodity printing, packaging or tissue papers and can therefore respond differently to broader market cycles.
For Wuzhou Special Paper, combining specialty grades with its expanding industrial packaging paper capacity provides exposure to several different end markets.
Food-grade specialty papers could also benefit from seasonal consumption patterns during the second half of the year, according to the company.
Packaging Demand Expected to Strengthen in H2
Wuzhou Special Paper expects relatively limited additions of new industry capacity during the second half of 2026.
At the same time, the company anticipates stronger seasonal demand as customers prepare for major consumption periods in China.
Manufacturers typically begin stocking ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival during the third quarter, while the Double 11 shopping period creates additional packaging demand in the fourth quarter.
Wuzhou expects these seasonal factors to support consumption of both packaging papers and food-grade specialty papers.
The company therefore expects mainstream paper prices to remain relatively firm during the second half.
Raw Material Costs Remain an Important Variable
The company’s outlook also assumes greater stability in raw material costs.
For packaging and specialty paper producers, changes in recovered fibre and virgin pulp prices can materially affect manufacturing margins, particularly when increases cannot immediately be passed through to customers.
Wuzhou Special Paper expects the combination of stronger peak-season demand and more stable input costs to support further improvement in industry profitability.
However, this remains the company’s market outlook rather than a guaranteed outcome. Actual second-half performance will depend on paper demand, capacity utilization, selling prices and raw material movements.
Hubei Expansion Changes Wuzhou’s Growth Profile
Wuzhou Special Paper’s first-half results show how recently commissioned packaging paper capacity is beginning to contribute at scale.
Production of 1.2042 million tonnes and sales of 1.2155 million tonnes demonstrate that the company’s expanded manufacturing base is translating into higher commercial volumes.
More importantly, earnings increased considerably faster than revenue, with adjusted profit nearly doubling year on year.
For the second half of 2026, the key question will be whether Wuzhou can maintain high utilization at its Hubei operations while preserving the margin improvements achieved across its paper portfolio.
If seasonal packaging demand develops as the company expects, the fourth quarter’s e-commerce-driven consumption period will provide an important test of the new capacity and the strength of China’s packaging paper recovery.
