Find the Right Paper Converting Machine

From slitting and rewinding to printing and automation, we provide paper converting machine solutions for your production needs.

For most thermal receipt roll manufacturers, the slitter rewinder machine is the basic paper converting equipment.

You start with a wide thermal paper jumbo roll.

The machine unwinds the jumbo roll, controls the web, slits it into the required widths and rewinds the material into finished receipt rolls.

This process is commonly used to produce:

  • POS receipt rolls
  • Cash register rolls
  • ATM paper rolls
  • Lottery paper rolls
  • Till rolls
  • Payment-terminal rolls
  • Other custom thermal receipt rolls

For standard blank receipt rolls, slitting and rewinding may be enough.

But not every customer wants a blank thermal paper roll.

Some customers want their receipt rolls printed with a logo, company information, promotional message, advertising content or other customized graphics.

For these orders, the converting process becomes different.

Instead of printing the jumbo roll on a separate flexographic press and then moving it to another machine for slitting and rewinding, the printing process can be integrated directly into the thermal receipt rolls slitter rewinder.

At Jota Machinery, we can configure inline flexo printing from one color to four colors according to the customer’s printing and converting requirements.

A Slitter Rewinder Is the Basic Machine for Receipt Roll Converting

Thermal paper normally arrives at the converting factory as a large parent roll or jumbo roll.

That roll cannot be loaded directly into a POS printer, ATM or cash register.

It first needs to be converted into a smaller finished paper roll.

The basic roll-to-roll converting process is:

Jumbo roll unwinding → web guiding → slitting → rewinding → finished receipt rolls

During production, the machine needs to manage more than the finished width.

The converter also needs to consider:

  • Jumbo roll width
  • Jumbo roll diameter
  • Finished roll width
  • Rewind diameter
  • Running length
  • Core size
  • Cored or coreless production
  • Web tension
  • Slitting accuracy
  • Roll edge quality
  • Production speed

This is why a receipt paper slitter rewinder is one of the fundamental machines in a thermal paper converting factory.

What Changes When the Customer Wants Printed Receipt Rolls?

Blank thermal receipt rolls are common, but customized printing can give the finished product another function.

A supermarket may want its brand printed on the paper.

A restaurant may want promotional information.

A retailer may want contact information or advertising content.

Other businesses may require a repeating logo or custom graphic.

If printing and slitting are carried out on separate machines, the production route may look like this:

Thermal paper jumbo roll → flexo printing press → printed jumbo roll → slitter rewinder → finished printed receipt rolls

This means the material needs to pass through two separate production stages.

The printed jumbo roll must be handled, transferred and set up again before the slitting process starts.

For converters that regularly produce customized printed receipt rolls, this additional step may increase the amount of material handling and production setup required.

Inline Flexo Printing Combines Two Processes

An alternative is to integrate the flexographic printing unit directly with the thermal receipt rolls slitter rewinder.

The production flow then becomes:

Jumbo roll → inline flexo printing → slitting → rewinding → finished printed thermal receipt rolls

Instead of printing first and slitting later, both operations are completed during the same roll-to-roll process.

This configuration can reduce the need to move a printed jumbo roll between separate machines.

It can also make the production workflow easier to organize where printed receipt rolls are a regular part of the factory’s order mix.

One-Color to Four-Color Inline Flexo Printing

Not every receipt roll requires the same printing configuration.

Some jobs only need a simple one-color logo.

Others may require two, three or four colors.

For this reason, Jota Machinery can provide one-color, two-color, three-color or four-color inline flexo printing according to the actual application.

One-Color Printing

One-color flexographic printing is suitable for relatively simple applications such as:

  • Company logos
  • Contact information
  • Repeating text
  • Basic branding
  • Simple promotional messages

If the artwork only requires one printing color, adding more print stations is unnecessary.

The machine configuration should match the actual job.

Two- to Four-Color Printing

For more complex branding or graphics, additional flexo print units can be integrated.

Two-, three- or four-color printing gives the converter more flexibility when customers request multi-color artwork.

However, the required number of colors should be confirmed before machine configuration.

There is no reason to build a four-color printing system for a converter whose regular business only requires one-color receipt rolls.

Why Combine Printing, Slitting and Rewinding?

The main reason is not simply to add another function to the machine.

It is to simplify a production process that would otherwise require separate equipment.

With separate production:

Printing → material transfer → second setup → slitting → rewinding

With an inline configuration:

Printing → slitting → rewinding

The exact benefit depends on the customer’s production volume, order structure and factory workflow.

For a converter that only receives occasional printed-roll orders, a separate printing process may still be practical.

But if customized thermal receipt rolls are an important part of daily production, integrating the processes can be worth considering.

Printing Registration Matters During Slitting

Printing adds another requirement that does not exist when converting blank thermal paper.

With blank rolls, the converter is mainly concerned with:

  • Finished width
  • Roll edges
  • Length
  • Diameter
  • Tension
  • Winding quality

Once artwork is printed on the web, the relative position between the printed pattern and the slit line also becomes important.

The finished roll should not have a logo or graphic gradually moving toward one side of the roll because the web or print position is not being controlled correctly.

For this reason, a printed-web converting project needs to consider both:

printing registration and slitting position.

This becomes particularly important where the printed artwork needs to remain centered or consistently positioned on each finished receipt roll.

A Printed Receipt Roll Machine Should Start With the Finished Product

When customers ask us about a thermal receipt paper converting machine with flexo printing, the first question should not simply be:

“Do you need one color or four colors?”

We first need to understand what the finished product looks like.

Useful information includes:

  • Thermal paper jumbo roll width
  • Maximum parent-roll diameter
  • Paper grammage
  • Finished receipt-roll width
  • Finished-roll diameter
  • Roll running length
  • Core size
  • Number of printing colors
  • Printing width
  • Print repeat requirement
  • Artwork layout
  • Expected production volume
  • Packing method

These details affect both the slitter rewinder configuration and the inline printing section.

Do You Actually Need Inline Flexo Printing?

Not every thermal receipt roll factory needs it.

If your business mainly produces blank POS rolls, ATM rolls or cash register rolls, a standard thermal paper slitter rewinder may already meet the production requirement.

If your customers frequently request customized printed thermal rolls, then inline flexo printing becomes more relevant.

The decision should depend on your actual order structure.

Ask:

  • How many printed receipt-roll orders do we receive?
  • How many printing colors do our customers normally request?
  • Are we currently outsourcing printing?
  • Do we already operate a separate flexo press?
  • How much time is spent moving rolls between printing and slitting?
  • Will printed rolls become a larger part of our business?

These questions are more useful than adding printing units simply because the option is available.

One Machine Does Not Need Every Function

A common mistake when buying converting equipment is to add every possible function.

More functions do not automatically mean a better machine for your factory.

A converter producing only blank thermal receipt rolls has different requirements from a company specializing in branded POS paper.

A factory producing one standard size every day has different priorities from a converter processing many widths and short custom orders.

The machine should follow the product.

Not the other way around.

From Blank Receipt Rolls to Custom Printed Rolls

The thermal receipt rolls slitter rewinder remains the basic machine for converting jumbo thermal paper into finished POS, ATM, cash register and other receipt rolls.

For blank thermal rolls, the standard slitting and rewinding process may be enough.

For customers who also require branding or customized graphics, inline flexographic printing can add the printing stage directly to the roll converting process.

Jota Machinery can configure one-color to four-color inline flexo printing together with thermal paper slitting and rewinding according to the customer’s actual production requirements.

If you are starting a thermal receipt roll business, first define the finished products you intend to sell.

If you already manufacture receipt rolls and want to add custom printing, prepare your jumbo-roll specifications, finished-roll sizes, artwork requirements and expected printing colors.

The right machine configuration should be built around those production requirements.
