Find the Right Paper Converting Machine

From slitting and rewinding to printing and automation, we provide paper converting machine solutions for your production needs.

A water-activated tape producer does not always want to sell plain brown or white tape.

Some customers want their company name and logo printed on the tape.

Some need product information, handling instructions or identification marks.

Others use printed water-activated tape as part of their packaging and branding.

This creates another question for the converter:

Where should the printing process be added?

One option is to print the water-activated tape jumbo roll on a separate flexographic printing press and then move the printed jumbo roll to a slitter rewinder.

That process works.

But it also means that printing and slitting rewinding are two separate production stages.

For some water-activated tape converters, especially those producing finished rolls directly from jumbo material, another option is to put the flexo printing section directly onto the slitter rewinder.

This is the approach we use at Jota Machinery for customers who need inline flexo printing and roll-to-roll slitting rewinding in one production line.

The Conventional Water-Activated Tape Printing Workflow

A typical separate-process arrangement can look like this:

Water-activated tape jumbo roll → flexo printing → printed jumbo roll → slitter rewinder → finished narrow rolls

The flexographic press handles the printing first.

After printing, the jumbo roll is transferred to the slitter rewinder, where it is converted into the required tape width and finished roll length.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this arrangement.

In fact, a separate printing press may be appropriate for factories with established printing departments, complicated printing requirements or production schedules that require printing and slitting to operate independently.

The difficulty is that the converter now has to manage two production processes.

The material is handled between machines.

The printed jumbo roll needs another production stage.

Additional floor space is required.

Production planning also has to coordinate printing capacity with slitting and rewinding capacity.

For some WAT producers, this is more equipment and material handling than they actually need.

Can Flexo Printing Be Added Directly to a Slitter Rewinder?

Yes.

For suitable water-activated tape applications, a flexographic printing unit can be integrated with the slitter rewinder so that the material is printed, slit and rewound during the same converting process.

The workflow then becomes:

WAT jumbo roll → inline flexo printing → slitting → rewinding → finished WAT rolls

Instead of producing another printed jumbo roll for a separate slitting process, the machine can convert the original jumbo roll directly toward the required finished-roll specification.

At Jota Machinery, we provide this type of inline flexo slitting rewinding solution for water-activated tape converters that need printing as part of their finished-roll production.

The objective is not simply to add another printing unit to the machine.

The printing section has to work together with the web transport, tension control, slitting section and rewinding process.

That coordination matters because printing quality is only one part of the final product.

The converter still needs the correct tape width, stable winding and the required roll length.

Why Print Water-Activated Tape During Slitting and Rewinding?

The main reason is process integration.

Imagine that a customer orders water-activated kraft tape printed with its company logo.

You already have a jumbo roll of WAT material.

With a separate-process arrangement, you may need to:

  1. Load the jumbo roll onto the flexo printing machine.
  2. Complete the printing process.
  3. Remove the printed jumbo roll.
  4. Transfer it to the slitter rewinder.
  5. Load and thread the material again.
  6. Set the required slitting width.
  7. Rewind the material into finished rolls.

With an inline printing slitter rewinder, several of those stages can be combined.

The jumbo roll enters the machine once.

The flexographic printing section applies the required print.

The web continues through the machine.

The slitting section divides it into the required narrow tape widths.

The rewinding section produces the finished rolls according to the configured converting requirements.

For the right production application, this can simplify the workflow considerably.

What Can Be Printed on Water-Activated Tape?

Printing requirements vary from customer to customer.

One buyer may only need a repeating company logo.

Another may want the company name, website or handling message.

Some converters also produce customized printed WAT for different end customers.

Common requirements can include:

  • Company logos
  • Brand names
  • Product identification
  • Packaging information
  • Handling instructions
  • Repeating graphics
  • Customized customer artwork

The important point is that the printing requirement should be discussed before the machine configuration is finalized.

The number of colors, artwork, repeat length, material characteristics, required tape width and finished-roll specification can all influence the converting solution.

There is no reason to assume that one printing configuration will suit every water-activated tape producer.

Printing Is Only Useful If You Can Check the Print

Adding flexo printing creates another responsibility for the operator:

How do you know the print is running correctly while the machine is producing?

If the operator only discovers a printing problem after a large quantity of material has already been rewound, the result can be unnecessary waste and rework.

For this reason, Jota Machinery can integrate a real-time print inspection and monitoring system into the printing slitting machine.

The operator can use the monitoring system to observe the printed web while the machine is running.

This is particularly useful when checking whether the printed image remains acceptable during continuous production.

The monitoring system does not replace proper flexographic printing setup.

Plate preparation, ink condition, printing pressure, web tension and other operating conditions still need to be managed correctly.

Its role is to give the operator better visibility into what is happening on the web during production.

That distinction is important.

A monitoring system helps you see the printing condition. It does not automatically correct every possible printing defect.

Slitting Accuracy Still Matters After Printing

Once graphics are added to the web, the slitting requirement can become more demanding.

For plain WAT, the operator is mainly concerned with producing the specified tape width and building a good finished roll.

For printed tape, the relationship between the printed pattern and slit position may also matter.

For example, if a repeated logo needs to remain visually positioned within each finished tape roll, web tracking and the relationship between the artwork and cutting position need to be considered during machine configuration and production setup.

This is why a printing slitter rewinder should not be treated as simply:

a slitter rewinder + a printer attached to the front.

Printing, web transport, slitting and rewinding are part of the same roll-to-roll process.

An unstable web before the printing section can affect printing.

Poor web control after printing can affect slitting.

Incorrect winding conditions can still produce a poor finished roll even when the printed image itself looks good.

The complete web path matters.

Inline Flexo Printing Does Not Replace Every Standalone Flexo Press

This is also where a machinery supplier needs to be realistic.

An inline flexo slitter rewinder is not automatically the correct solution for every WAT factory.

If your business handles complicated printing jobs, frequent artwork changes, specialized printing requirements or production volumes that justify an independent printing department, a separate flexo press may make more sense.

But if your production objective is:

Take a water-activated tape jumbo roll and convert it into printed narrow finished rolls in an integrated process,

then inline flexo printing deserves consideration.

The right machine layout depends on what you are actually producing.

Before selecting the equipment, we normally need to understand questions such as:

  • What WAT material are you running?
  • What is the jumbo-roll specification?
  • How many printing colors do you require?
  • What artwork will be printed?
  • What finished tape widths do you produce?
  • What finished roll lengths are required?
  • How frequently do you change jobs?
  • Do you need the printed position to correspond with the slit position?
  • What level of print monitoring do your operators require?

Those answers are more useful than simply asking:

“Can you put a flexo printer on the slitter rewinder?”

One Jumbo Roll In, Printed Finished Rolls Out

For water-activated tape converters, the value of inline flexo printing is easy to understand when you look at the production flow.

Instead of:

Print first → move the jumbo roll → slit and rewind later

the production line can be configured around:

Unwind → flexo print → inspect → slit → rewind

The result is an integrated water-activated tape converting process built around the finished product you actually need to ship.

At Jota Machinery, we supply roll-to-roll paper converting machinery and can configure slitter rewinder solutions with inline flexographic printing for suitable water-activated tape applications.

If you are planning to produce printed WAT, the first step should not be choosing how many machines to buy.

Start with your material, artwork, printing requirement, tape width and finished-roll specification.

From there, you can decide whether a separate printing process or an inline flexo printing slitter rewinder is the better production route for your factory.
