FAQ
What is a slitting machine?

The slitting machine is an efficient roll to roll processing technology designed for converting large rolls into narrower ones. The initial roll is referred to as the jumbo roll, while the subsequent rolls are the narrower versions.

The machine not only allows for precise width adjustments but also enables the production of fixed-length rolls.

Key components of the slitting machine include the unwinder stand, cutting blade, and rewinding section. The process begins by feeding the jumbo roll from the unwinder stand to the cutting blade, where the material is slit into various widths and then rewound onto cores of specified dimensions.

What is the purpose of slitting?

In the flexible packaging industry, end clients often require smaller rolls, making them essential for various applications.

For instance, in the cash register sector, merchants need thermal paper rolls in widths of 56mm and 80mm.

In the medical industry, healthcare providers require ultrasound paper rolls in widths of 84mm, 110mm, and 210mm, typically with fixed lengths. These critical products underscore the significant role of the slitting process.

The slitting process provides manufacturers with the necessary equipment to efficiently separate narrow rolls from jumbo rolls. This function is the primary purpose of the slitting machine.

What is the purpose of a slitter?

The term “slitter” encompasses various types of equipment, including the slitting machine, slitting rewinding machine, and slitter rewinder machine.

At Jota Machinery, our slitting solutions are primarily utilized in the flexible packaging industry, mass production in paper mills, and for personal slitting applications in home settings.

How does slitting process work?

The slitting machine is typically operated by a dedicated technician.

Prior to operation, our programmer inputs the core instructions into the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).

Once the slitting machine receives the program, it can efficiently cut the jumbo roll into narrower rolls, following the processes of unwinding, traction, slitting, and rewinding.

2 points understand what is a slitter rewinder machine?

A slitter rewinder machine is a paper processing device used to cut wide rolls of paper into rolls of varying widths and diameters. It is widely used in the paper converting industry and in pre-press and post-press machinery.

The main purposes of a slitter rewinder machine include:

  1. To provide precise specifications according to user requirements.
  2. To inspect jumbo rolls quality issues produced in the previous process during slitting rewinding.
  3. To correct material misalignment or trim off parts with printing and lamination defects, thus improving product quality.
  4. To ensure a good rewinding state for finished products.

The traditional control scheme of a slitting rewinding machine (also called slitter rewinder machine) involves using a large motor to drive the unwind and rewind shafts. Magnetic powder clutches are added to these shafts, and the resistance is controlled by adjusting the current, thereby controlling the surface tension of the material.

The magnetic powder brake is a special automated actuator that transmits torque through magnetic powder in its working gap. By changing the magnetic current, the magnetic state of the powder changes, allowing for torque adjustment. It can be used for stepless speed regulation from zero to synchronous speed, suitable for fine adjustments at high speeds and in small to medium power systems. It is also used in tension control systems for unwinding and rewinding to maintain constant tension during winding processes by adjusting the torque via current regulation.

The slitter machine mainly features a magnetic powder clutch as a resistance device. Through system control, a DC voltage is output to adjust the resistance generated by the magnetic powder clutch. Its main advantage lies in being a passive device capable of controlling small tensions.

A paper slitter rewinder machine consists of an unwinding stand, unwinding tension control, a transmission system, a splicing table, a CCD camera appearance defect detection system, traction components, slitting blade sets, waste rewinding and discharge devices, among others.

It cuts raw materials into multiple independent strips. The working principle involves fixing raw materials on the unwinding stand equipped with a tension controller to maintain the required tension.

The materials are then pulled by rubber rollers, cut into strips with round slitting blades, and guided through rollers to A and B winding shafts for finished rewinding. The transmission system uses the main motor to drive the traction rubber rollers and winding shafts synchronously for feeding and rewinding.

Next, let’s discuss the four main functions of the slitting machine:

Constant tension control tech for the slitter rewinder machine

During the winding and unwinding process, as the unwinding diameter decreases and the winding diameter increases, changes in roll diameter cause tension to fluctuate under constant motor speed control. This may lead to wrinkles due to insufficient tension or tearing due to excessive tension. To prevent these issues, maintaining constant tension during the process is essential. The essence of constant tension control is to adjust the motor’s output torque according to changes in roll diameter while keeping the tension constant.

When raw materials are unwound and wound, uneven coating, uneven longitudinal tension, uneven edges, misalignment between transport rollers, or excessive friction between the traction rollers and their surfaces can cause the material to deviate during transport. To avoid such “deviation,” a web guiding device is installed on the slitting machine’s winding and unwinding systems.

Depending on where the guiding device is installed, it can be classified as double-sided guiding or single-sided guiding.

Double-sided Guiding

Especially for raw materials with uneven edges, staggered layers or tower shapes, or raw materials that are difficult to align with the center line of the unit during the unwinding process, unwinders often use bilateral correction. There are generally two forms of bilateral correction. One way is the dual detection light head system, that is, the centering system, referred to as CPC (center position control).

Two sets of detection light heads are set symmetrically to the center line of the unit, and are driven by a stepper motor to move in the opposite direction through a forward and reverse screw, that is, synchronous inward or outward movement.

When the material begins to pass through the belt into the unit, the light head moves inward.

When only one of the light heads detects the edge of the belt, it means that the material has deviated in this direction. At the same time, a signal is sent to move the unwinder to drive the material to move until both light heads detect that the output on both sides of the material is equal.

The light head stops moving, the unwinder stops moving, and the material is in the center position. The advantage of this method is that the system can automatically align the center without considering the width of the roll during the unwinding operation.

EPC (Edge Position Control)

Another way is to control the edge position of the raw material by detecting it, so that the edge position of the feeding unit is fixed, which is referred to as EPC (edge position control). The optical head frame is installed on the transmission side of the unit. According to the width of the incoming material, the position of the detection optical head is pre-set.

When the unwinding material is fed into the unit, the detection optical head sends a signal according to the coverage of the material (full coverage, full brightness, half coverage), and moves the unwinding machine so that one side of the material is always in the semi-covered position of the optical head.

The advantage of this method is that it has a single optical head and the optical head device is relatively simple, but before operation, the original position of the optical head must be pre-adjusted according to different bandwidths.

Differential friction shaft rewinding for R2R processing

The differential friction shaft achieves tension balance during winding by utilizing the slip of individual slip rings. It is an essential component in slitter rewinder machines, significantly improving product yield and reducing production costs.

The slitting tool is a highly precise cutting device that reduces machine downtime. It consists of upper and lower round blades mounted on the slitting machine’s blade shafts, using a rolling shear principle to slit flexible packaging materials or advanced composites prepreg material (15-450 gsm).

Razor Blade Slitting

Just like a razor, a single-sided blade or a double-sided blade is fixed on a fixed blade holder, and the blade is dropped during the material running process, so that the blade cuts the material longitudinally to achieve the purpose of slitting. Razor knives are commonly used for roll-to-roll slitting of thin materials such as films and BOPP tapes.

Rotary Blade Slitting

Round blade slitting is suitable for slitting thicker material and papers.

Circular knife slitting is when the material and the slitting tool have a certain wrap angle, and the upper knife falls to cut the material. This slitting method can prevent the material from drifting and has high slitting accuracy. However, it is not very convenient to adjust the knife.

When installing the lower disc knife, the entire shaft must be removed. In order to solve this problem, our R&D team designed an automatic knife positioning system. The servo motor drives the linear guide rail system to automatically adjust the slitting circular knife to the specified width instead of manually adjusting the width.

Score Slitting

It is mainly composed of a bottom roller which is synchronized with the material speed and has a certain wrap angle with the material, and an easily adjustable pneumatic knife. Ideal for high-speed slitting (500-1000 m/min) and works with a variety of materials like films, paper, and non-woven fabrics.

Modern advancements in slitting machines include automated blade adjustments, improved tension control, and precision mechanisms, making them vital for efficient and high-quality material processing.
