fibre-based tray packaging

Amcor is expanding its collaboration with Metsä Group and G. Mondini to bring a fibre-based tray system for protein and chilled ready-meal packaging to Interpack, held in Germany from 7–13 May 2026.

The partnership combines three core capabilities:

  • Amcor: barrier liners, top-web films and AmFiber technology
  • Metsä Group: Muoto moulded fibre trays from renewable wood fibre
  • G. Mondini: Trave Streamline sealing machinery for food packaging lines

Why This Matters

Fibre-based food packaging often faces one key challenge:

It must be sustainable without sacrificing line performance, food safety or shelf life.

This is where the partnership becomes important. The tray system is not just a material concept. It is designed as a complete packaging platform where the tray, barrier liner, top web and machinery work together.

Key Features of the Fibre Tray System

The solution is designed for:

  • ready meals
  • chilled foods
  • meat and protein products
  • retailer-ready food packaging

Main functions include:

  • recyclable fibre-based tray structure
  • lightweight barrier liner
  • top-web film sealing
  • microwaveable and ovenable options
  • easy-peel functionality
  • strong shelf presentation
  • compatibility with high-speed food packaging lines

Machinery Integration Is the Real Advantage

G. Mondini’s Trave Streamline system is designed to move trays through sealing with reduced friction, improving operational efficiency.

This matters because many sustainable packaging concepts fail at the factory floor stage. If the material cannot run smoothly, seal reliably, and meet food safety requirements, adoption becomes difficult.

By demonstrating the system live at Interpack, the three companies are showing that fibre-based trays can be both environmentally aligned and industrially practical.

Strategic Industry Insight

This launch reflects a wider packaging shift:

Sustainable food packaging is moving from material substitution to system integration.

The winning solutions will not simply replace plastic with fibre. They must combine:

  • fibre structure
  • barrier performance
  • sealing reliability
  • shelf-life protection
  • equipment compatibility
  • brand differentiation

Final Thought

Amcor, Metsä Group and G. Mondini are positioning fibre-based trays as more than an eco-friendly option.

They are presenting them as a high-performance packaging system for demanding food applications.

For food brands, the key message is clear:

Future-ready packaging must protect the product, run efficiently on the line, and meet sustainability expectations at the same time.
