What is a POS Thermal Paper Roll?

POS thermal paper rolls are heat-sensitive paper rolls used for receipt printing in cash registers, POS terminals, kiosks, ATMs and other thermal printers. Instead of using ink, the printer’s thermal head reacts with the coated surface of the paper to produce text, barcodes and transaction information.

POS rolls are available in different widths, outer diameters, lengths and core sizes. Common widths include 57 mm (2¼″) and 80 mm (3⅛″), but the correct specification depends on the printer and application.

When choosing a thermal paper roll, do not check the width alone. The roll width, outer diameter, paper length and core size should match the printer requirements. For businesses planning to produce POS rolls, these same specifications also define the finished product that the converting process needs to produce.

Rule of thumb: 80 mm × 80 mm (≈3 1/8″ × 230′) is the default for most desktop POS.
Mobile/terminal devices usually take 57 mm width with 30–50 mm OD.

Actual length varies with paper thickness (higher GSM ⇒ shorter length at same OD).

H) Buying Tips (from your key points—condensed)

  • Match the manual: Width must match the slot; core (often 7/16″ / 11 mm) must match the spindle; OD must fit the bay.
  • Pick by use: Retail/hospitality: 80 mm; mobile/terminals: 57 mm; kiosk/medical: 70–102 mm.
  • Balance cost & uptime: Longer rolls (e.g., 80 × 80 mm / 3 1⁄8″ × 230′) reduce changeovers.
  • Health & compliance: Prefer BPA-free (or phenol-free) thermal, especially for food-adjacent operations.
  • Units: 1″ = 25.4 mm · 1′ = 0.3048 m.

From POS Roll Size to Production Setup

Choosing the finished roll size is only the first step when planning POS thermal paper roll production.

Once the required width, outer diameter or roll length, and core size are confirmed, these specifications become the basis for planning the converting process.

For example, a converter planning to produce 57 mm and 80 mm POS rolls needs to consider these finished-roll dimensions together with the thermal paper jumbo roll and required production output before selecting a slitting and rewinding configuration.

This is why JOTA normally starts a thermal paper converting project with the finished-roll specifications rather than machine speed alone.

900A-Advanced-Slitter-Rewinder-Machine

For standard POS and receipt-roll production, thermal paper jumbo rolls are slit and rewound into the required finished widths, diameters and core specifications.

For higher production output, a fully automatic configuration can reduce manual handling and integrate additional roll finishing, packaging or palletizing processes.

If your rolls require logos or promotional information, inline flexographic printing can be combined with slitting and rewinding in one production process.
