A High-Efficiency Method for Handling Plotter Paper Rolls

shaftless rewinding

Shaftless rewinding is a roll winding method in which the finished rolls are held and rotated by expandable chucks on each end, instead of a central shaft or mandrel. This system enables faster roll changes, easier core handling, and improved safety—making it ideal for high-speed slitting and converting operations.

How does shaftless rewinding work?

In a shaftless rewinding system, each paper or film roll is supported and driven by hydraulic or pneumatic chucks on both ends, rather than a traditional central shaft. These expandable chucks insert into the core and grip it securely from the inside.

During the winding process, the chucks rotate the core to collect the slit material, while rider rolls (lay-on rolls) apply consistent pressure from above to ensure tight and even winding. Servo motors and tension control systems work together to maintain precise web tension as the roll diameter increases.

Because there is no heavy shaft to remove or insert, roll changes are much faster and safer—making shaftless rewinding ideal for high-speed, continuous slitting and converting operations.

4 Reasons You Should Choose Shaftless Rewinding

01

Faster Roll Changeovers

Shaftless chucks eliminate the need for manual shaft insertion. Operators can load and unload rolls directly at floor level, reducing downtime and increasing production throughput.

02

Enhanced Safety & Ergonomics

Without heavy steel shafts to lift, operator strain is significantly reduced. Hydraulic chucks handle all core clamping, improving workplace safety and minimizing manual handling.

03

Flexible Core Compatibility

Quick-change chuck heads allow seamless switching between different core sizes (e.g. 3″, 6″) without changing hardware. Shaftless arms can also adjust for varying roll widths automatically.

04

Consistent Winding Quality

Floating chucks and lay-on rider rolls apply uniform tension across the roll. Combined with closed-loop servo control, shaftless systems deliver perfectly wound rolls with even density and no core damage.
