Water Activated Tape
Water activated tape is an industrial adhesive designed as an effective alternative to conventional BOPP tape. Depending on its formulation, it is available in both fiber-reinforced and non-reinforced variants, with the reinforced version offering enhanced strength and durability for demanding packaging applications.
Many plastic tapes—especially those used in packaging—are formulated with adhesives that complicate recycling. The adhesive residues make it difficult to process the plastic efficiently, contributing to low recycling rates. Some industry estimates suggest that, in many regions, less than 20% of these materials are recycled.
Plastic tapes, often made from materials like BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene), are a component of the broader plastic packaging waste stream. When not recycled, these materials typically end up in landfills or, worse, in natural ecosystems where they can persist for decades.
As plastic tapes degrade—either in landfills or through environmental weathering—they can break down into microplastics. These tiny plastic fragments have been increasingly identified as pollutants in waterways, soil, and even the food chain.
The production processes for plastic tapes (and many other plastic packaging products) require significant energy inputs, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. This carbon footprint is compounded by the environmental impacts of disposal.
Plastic killer – what is water activated tape ?
In the evolving world of industrial packaging, water activated tape stands out as a premium sealing solution. Crafted from a high-quality paper substrate and activated by water, this tape utilizes a starch-based adhesive to penetrate and bond deeply with the packaging surface. This process not only ensures a secure, tamper-evident seal but also contributes to enhanced durability, especially when fiber reinforcement is incorporated. As industries shift towards more sustainable practices, water activated tape offers a reliable, eco-friendly alternative to conventional pressure-sensitive tapes, combining performance with a reduced environmental footprint.

Fiberglass reinforcement Weaving Machine
The weaving machine is primarily utilized for interlacing fiberglass roving into a chessboard pattern and subsequently combining it with kraft paper. Additionally, the machine is compatible with water-based adhesives and PE-coated kraft paper, enabling effective lamination of the materials together.

laminating
The fiberglass roving is woven into a diamond pattern, while additional fiberglass is arranged in a parallel configuration. These distinct layers are then laminated with kraft paper using adhesive to form a robust composite material.

chessbord shape
According to our research, combining a diamond pattern with a parallel (chessboard) configuration delivers superior reinforcement strength compared to a only horizontal arrangement.
How is water activated tape made?
Jota Machinery embarked on its water-activated tape business in response to the plastic ban policy.
By 2025, our slitter rewinder had established a strong presence in India, Mexico, Germany, and South Africa—a testament to our relentless pursuit of excellence and continuous research and development.
At the close of 2024, we further advanced our product portfolio by launching our fiberglass reinforcement weaving and laminating machine.
Our journey, marked by perseverance and overcoming significant challenges, reflects our unwavering commitment to quality and innovation.

water based glue
The anilox roller ensures that the water-based glue is evenly distributed on the kraft paper by controlling the volume of glue through its engineered microcells and transferring it consistently upon contact.

PE coated paper
The PE coated kraft paper is directly introduced into a hot melt process. In this stage, the liquid adhesive is applied, which simultaneously bonds and laminates the fiberglass as the central reinforcing layer.
slitter rewinder machine
The machine is a specially designed, integrated roll-to-roll processing system engineered to cut gummed tape into smaller segments with fixed widths or lengths.

inline flexographic printing
Inline flexo printing with water-based ink delivers a high-quality 3- to 4-color printing effect. Additionally, the slitter rewinder is equipped with an accumulator to ensure maximum operational speed.

Online Printing detector
The system continuously evaluates parameters such as color consistency, registration accuracy, and overall print integrity. Any deviations from predetermined quality standards are promptly identified.
