Thermal Printer Paper Roll Sizes by Use Case

Published on DECEMBER 31, 2025 by Jota Machinery | 10:25:39 | Bruce Zhou

thermal printer paper roll sizes

If you’ve ever ordered “the same rolls as last time” and the lid suddenly won’t close, you already know the truth:

Thermal roll sizing is not one number.
It’s a fit system: width + outer diameter (OD) + core ID + paper thickness (GSM).

This guide is written to help buyers, store owners, and operators choose the correct thermal paper roll sizes by application, without guessing.

1) The 4 measurements that actually matter

1) Width (the non-negotiable)

If the width is wrong, the roll won’t feed correctly—period.

Typical widths you’ll see:

2) Outer diameter (OD) (the “lid won’t close” problem)

OD determines whether the roll physically fits in the printer bay.

Rule: You can always go smaller OD (you’ll just replace more often).
You cannot go larger than the printer’s maximum OD.

3) Core ID (the inner tube size)

Common receipt cores:

  • 11–12.7 mm (typical POS and EFTPOS cores)
  • 25.4 mm (1″) and 50.8 mm (2″) for many ATM/kiosk long rolls

4) GSM / thickness (changes length & “fullness”)

A thicker paper can reduce roll length for the same OD. Many receipt rolls are in the ~48–60 gsm range, while ATM rolls and some kiosk rolls are often heavier for durability.

2) POS receipt printers (Retail / Hospitality)

The “standard” POS size

Most countertop POS receipt printers use:

  • 80 mm width
  • OD commonly ~80–83 mm (varies by printer bay)

A real-world reference: Epson TM-T88 series printers typically support 80 mm (or 58 mm with a spacer) and allow roll OD up to 83 mm, with spool diameter around 12 mm. Amazon Images

Practical buying sizes you’ll see

  • 80 × 80 mm (very common shorthand)
  • 80 × 70 mm (still common)
  • 80 × 50 mm (compact printers or tight bays)

Buyer tip: If your printer supports 80 mm width but your counter space is tight (or you hate jams), a slightly smaller OD roll can be more stable.

3) EFTPOS / credit-card terminals (Verifone, Ingenico, PAX, Square, etc.)

For payment terminals, the industry “default” is:

  • 57–58 mm width
  • Smaller OD so the terminal cover closes

Typical working sizes:

  • 57 × 30–40 mm (many mobile units)
  • 57 × 40–50 mm (many countertop terminals)

What trips people up

  • Mobile EFTPOS terminals are usually OD-limited: a roll that fits a countertop base often won’t fit a handheld device.
  • Core vs coreless: some newer devices use coreless rolls; older ones may still expect a core.

4) Mobile receipt printers (delivery, queue busting, field service)

Most handheld printers still live in the EFTPOS world:

  • 57–58 mm width
  • OD often ~25–50 mm
  • Often coreless options (less waste, more usable paper per bay)

Field tip: If receipts must survive friction, moisture, or wallet storage, choose top-coated thermal instead of “eco/basic” grades.

5) Kiosk printers (self-service, parking, lottery, ticketing)

Kiosks are where “standard” stops being standard.

You’ll commonly see:

  • 57/58 mm and 80 mm (receipt-style kiosks)
  • 70 mm (some lottery/gaming systems)
  • 102 mm (4″) (ticketing / wider formats)

Kiosks also tend to use larger OD rolls (less maintenance), and sometimes larger cores (1″ or more) for stability.

Maintenance reality: kiosk rolls are chosen to reduce service calls. That usually means bigger OD + stronger core + better coating.

6) ATM receipt rolls (high length, big core, durable paper)

ATM rolls are a different class: long length, big OD, and specific cores.

A very common example format for Triton-style ATM rolls is:

  • 60 mm (2 3/8″) width
  • 850 ft (259 m) length
  • ~6″ roll diameter
  • 2″ core Talco+1

Why ATMs often use tougher paper
ATM receipts get handled, folded, and stored. Many ATM rolls are listed as BPA-free and heavier basis weights for durability.

7) Medical imaging thermal rolls (ultrasound printers)

Medical imaging papers are not “receipt paper.” They’re made for:

  • higher image density
  • sharper contrast
  • better archive stability

A common ultrasound format is:

  • 110 mm width
  • often around 20 m length per roll
    (Exact specs vary by brand/model.)

Important: Don’t mix “receipt thermal” with “medical imaging thermal.” Even if the width fits, image performance and coating requirements are different.

8) Quick selection checklist (what to do before you buy)

  1. Confirm width (measure an existing roll or check the printer label/manual).
  2. Confirm maximum OD (the easiest way to avoid “lid won’t close”).
  3. Confirm core ID (especially for ATM/kiosk).
  4. Decide paper grade
    • Standard POS receipts: basic thermal is fine for short-life receipts
    • ATM/kiosk/field use: consider top-coated for smudge + fade resistance
  5. Check whether your device uses a spacer (80 → 58 mm)
    • Example: Epson TM-T88 supports 80 mm and 58 mm with the correct parts/spacer.

9) Simple size map (fast reference)

  • POS countertop receipt printers: 80 mm width (OD often up to ~83 mm depending on printer)
  • EFTPOS/card terminals: 57–58 mm width (OD typically smaller, especially handheld)
  • ATMs: often 60 mm × 850 ft style rolls with 2″ cores
  • Kiosks/ticketing: 57/80/70/102 mm depending on kiosk type
  • Ultrasound/medical imaging: often 110 mm width (model-specific)
